This may be a silly question but when you want to put extra wraps under the grip to build them up, how is this done? Do you use masking tape to do this? If so, I assume the extra wraps (masking tape) go on the shaft first and then the double sided grip tape. I'm just curious how this is done. Thanks. Bob

Building up is done with masking tape - put on shaft (appropriate number of wraps) and then double sided tape on top of that. The double sided tape doesn't count toward number of wraps.

Tim,
I understand that grips that are too big inhibit a proper release. What would likely be the result of having grips not large enough, particularly in the lower hand area?
thanks, Jim |

2 issues if grip is too small:
1. Will slip in the hands (cause some twisting, slipping, etc..) especially when hands are wet/damp - sweating, etc..
2. Fingers will dig into the pads of the hands when trying to grip the club (wrap around the grip too much) - making grip uncomfortable.
If you are going to error - need to error on small side. But there within reason - grips can be too small.

Tim I am old natural golfer who just found your site. I use natural golf grips but I want to experiment this year without them. My grip size is large based on your chart which is 4 wraps lower 2 wraps upper. I regrip my own clubs so I should be able to play around with this anyways.
My question is when doing the wrap is there a method to it. Where on the shaft is consider upper and lower when doing the regrip. Do you divide the grip length in half and do the wraps this way.
Also do you have a recommendation of the type of grip to buy. I know NG grips were non tapered. Does this matter at all? Can I just buy any grip that I like and build them up |

Any grip that is comfortable to you. Divide the grip in half.. wraps above and below the mid point. You will not feel the divide when you put the grip on the club. Remember - a wrap of masking tape isn't that much.... everyone has the idea putting a wrap of masking tape on the grip will make it inches thicker - one wrap only equates to very little thickness. That is why we recommend different number of wraps for different hand sizes.

Hey Tim:
I am a little confused and freaked out on the number of build-up wraps to use (since I just re-gripped my clubs) and should I include or exclude the sticky tape in the number of wraps. Based on the chart and my hand size I applied a 3 and 1 wrap for my mid size golf pride dd2 grips. I used 2 wraps and then used the sticky on top to make 3 and 1. In recent discussions on the forum Scott suggested to include the sticky tape as part of the total wraps in this discussion you suggest not to count them. I worried that I have not placed enough wraps on my grips (they were not cheap) I agree that better to be a LITTLE small then to large. I have not been able to hit my clubs yet (to much snow) but they do feel really great in my hands and my fingers seems to be placed against the pads of my hands correctly. So should I be concerned about the one less wrap? Oh I sure love the Cobra 3100 I bought from you guys I have had them for a while now and I have had some great rounds with them. This is the first time I have re-gripped them so you can see my concern. I strongly suggest to all that if you use the Moe swing that you get your clubs fitted by T&T and buy them through them also.
Thanks in advance.

Boy was I confused and didn't even know it. I was using double sided tape for all my wraps. No wonder I go through so much of the stuff. Thanks for clearing that up for me, you just saved me 4 wraps worth of the double side tape. Now if I can just get myself weened off the coat hanger reminder grip I'll save some scotch tape as well. I have been holding the reminder in place with small tears of scotch tape untill I put the first layer of tape on, to be sure it stayed exactly in the right place. Nothing worse than getting the grip on and realizing the reminder has shifted to or fro, Have to yank off the grip and try not to ruin it in the process. Dan |

Nit-picking question. Two inch masking tape applied to a .600 shaft overlaps a small amount. Surely you don't have to trim off overlap. Also on following wraps is it wise to stagger the overlaps. I'm guessing you use two inch applied length wise instead of trying to spiral wrapping 1/2" tape. Paul |

Paul, When I am using multiple wraps under my grips I do not put the seam in the same place for each wrap. I put the first wrap seam at the bottom of shaft, the second on the left side, the third on the right side & if a fourth is used I put the seam on the top & then apply the two sided tape. It may not matter, But I feel there is not too much overlapping at any one point. //JOhn |

| I overlap each spiral 50% with the one before it and run the first two all the way up and then the third one 60% and fourth only 40%. For me, that helps reduce the feeling of a big step in the center. Also, I use the build-up tape you get at Golfsmith or Golfworks, it's not as thick as standard masking tape and is easier to work with. I tried masking tape when I ran out thinking they were the same, but my grip turned out unusable. |
