Tim,

Phil's book on the Short Game describes a method he calls the "Hinge and Hold". He says he uses it on virtually all shots from 50 yds in. What do you think of the Hinge and Hold? Pro's and Con's.

Tim,

I experimented with Phil's Hinge and Hold technique with my lob wedge. My conclusion is that it's not really that far different from your method. The feeling of keeping the clubface open on short pitches reminded me of something that happened at the last Moe Memorial in Orlando. I was struggling with short pitches from around the green. Distances were inconsistent and I kept pulling shots. You noted I was swinging too flat on the follow thru and the clubface was turning over. You demonstrated how it should be done and kept the clubface facing to the sky instead of to the left at the finish.

I could never feel comfortable doing the same thing myself. Now I think I understand why. The root cause of my flat follow thru was from releasing my hands and wrist too much. By "holding the hinge" (my feeling) I believe I am doing what you demonstrated. The result is solid contact, a nice consistent trajectory and the ball now flies straight to where I've aimed. By positioning the ball more forward or back (as you teach) combined with throwing my hands higher or keeping them low on the follow thru determines the trajectory.

Phil's chipping method is perhaps where he differs most from your teachings--primarily because he uses his 60 degree wedge, plays the ball from forward to middle of stance and cocks his wrists on the backswing. Alot more going on, so not as simple as your method of picking the club that lands 3 feet or so onto the green and using basically the same swing action on all chips. Your chipping method is definitely the way to go.

The current Golf Digest has excerpts from Phil's book.

btw--Did you see Phil slide the club under the ball on his flop attempt rom the second cut on 16th hole in Shanghai ? Followed immediately by Tiger chunking his shot off a tighter lie into the bunker. Those two shots combined with Ernie's duff into the water on 18 all within about 3 minutes time were kind of shocking.

I think one of the next Webinars should be devoted to the short game. I'd like to see you demonstrate some different types of shots including slow motion and focusing on the club movement.

regards, Jim
