"The video on how to hit a stinger (on www.knowmoe.com) rules!!

I went out today in pretty windy conditions-windy for us guys in the north east about 30 mph, I know that's not real wind in you Texas/ Oklahoma boys - I went over the stinger video on the know Moe site and was anxious to give it a try. The first 5 holes was with the wind so I wasn't able to use the stinger until the 6th hole which is a 150 yd par 3. I took one more club, 7 instead of 8 and hit my stinger under the wind to about 8 feet and drained the putt for my 4th straight birdie today. The 7th and 8th were dead into the wind and by hitting the stinger I was actually able to get the tee ball to where I would normally hit the ball in calm conditions. The ball stayed about 10 feet off the ground and just kept going. It was a beautifull sight. Thanks Tim for putting up that video. Between Todds ball position video and your stinger video I had my best 9 hole round ever at my home course. I shot a 31 on our par 35 front. I had 5 birdies and one bogey and the rest pars. The stinger actually worked so good that I think it improved my normal ball striking. Everything I hit today was so crisp. Now I don't know if the stinger is designed to help you with your ball striking but it sure helped mine today.
The only problem is that this is the first 9 hole round I played since last tuesdays round, and I shot even par on the back last week and now 4 under this week on the front so now its going to be combined to make up a score of 67 on my handicap card. It sure looks good but how the heck am I going to be able to play to that now? Oh well, I'll just have to keep up those scores or keep them down, you know what I mean. Thanks again for making such a great amount of awesome videos at our finger tips."

Practice Tip:

Do you want to cut your handicap in HALF?
Find out how a fellow alumni did it in just 4 months.
&
Continuation of Winter Practice

by Todd & Tim Graves

Questions - Do you want to cut your handicap in 1/2 in the next few months? Do you think it would take hours and hours of practice each day and 1000s of practice balls? If you do, you are GREATLY mistaken.

This past week, we were at our golf school at Barona Golf Course in San Diego, CA. The first 5 days, we held a camp with 7 participants - one was an alumni from our OKC camp this past June. He told me he was so happy with his improvement from his June camp, he wanted to bring his wife to our CA camp and continue his learning/improvement.

After talking to him - I wanted to share his experience/journey with everyone to help your golf game.

First some background:

Name: Bob D. (his name on our forum - www.moenormanforum.com is bobch53e)
Occupation: American Airline Pilot
Married (Bob and his wife Tomoe are both GGA alumni)
Children - mid 20s....
GGA Camps attended - GGA June '08 camp and last week - Oct ' 08
Handicap / golf scores prior to attending GGA camp: 17+ (average score low 90s)
Handicap today (4 months after attending GGA camp): 11 (average score high 70s / low 80s)
Low score: 75 (one month ago)
Time spent at range hitting balls - Twice a week

Bob has lowered his handicap by nearly 40% in just 4 months.

Why do I give you his background - to show you he is just like most - full time job, family, etc.. limited time to practice - but here is the kicker - he has dropped his handicap considerably in just a few months - very different than most conventional golfers.

Now let's talk about Bob's recommendations to you and what you can learn from Bob's progress....

First - Bob does not spend a lot of time each week hitting golf balls. Rather - he spends most of his time (he says a few minutes up to an hour+) each night working on the PVC drill and extended training grip club drill. He does hit a few balls into a net he has built in his garage, but has spent a majority of his time working on this swing since our last camp working on the PVC drill with and extended training grip club drill.

To see more about the PVC drill please click HERE.

To see more about the video containing the PVC drill, etc.. please click HERE.

Second - Bob understands making changes is a process and that it does take time, but the time can be minimized / shortened if the process is done right. He understands that he needs to check his changes to make sure he is on the "right track". To do so, he participates in our Internet Golf Academy - by far the easiest way to check your swing, determine what changes need to be made and get ongoing instruction from the GGA - you can see more at: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=98224626591949&pr=Internet_Golf_Academy&=SID

Bob's wife Tomoe told me is was very interesting to see Bob's change before he attended our first camp to when he came back. He no longer "randomly" practiced, hit balls, etc.. but rather seemed to always have something to work on (as we call it - practicing with a purpose everytime). In fact, Tomoe told me she became interested in our schools/camps watching the change in Bob - she wanted more information on what he was working on.

They both told me they the love our new webinars and they watch our webinars again and again for the new information (you can see more at www.knowmoe.com)

I asked Bob what he considered the biggest factor of his success - he told me it was understanding making changes is a process - a continual process and each change you make is a step toward improvement and obviously better scores....

Notes from Todd:

As your golf instructors for the Moe Norman Single Plane Golf Swing, we are always looking for better and different ways to teach you. The different ways allow all of you, who learn differently, to resonate with the various drills, instruction and information.

We are all uniquely human and we all learn differently. This means that some of you will enjoy the material while others may not find that it suits their type of learning. Which brings me to an important bit of information - something you need to know about the next three months and how important these months could be for your golf swing progress.

Even though all of us learn differently, there is one common denominator that neutralizes our ability to change. This common denominator is time and effort. No matter how you learn or what how your enjoy learning, it is going to take both time and effort to change.

Years ago, NASA performed an experiment that explains this phenomenon. They were experimenting with Scientists to study their stress levels so they placed goggles on them that turned their worlds literally upside down. Can you image wearing something that makes everything you see upside down? The scientists then sat back and observed.

Obviously the astronauts experienced huge amounts of stress but after some time, the stress reduced, then after 26 to 30 days, the image through the glasses turned right side up! They saw normally again.

Now the reason I am fascinated by this study, other than the fact that NASA treats human beings like Guinea Pigs, is that this study exactly represents why the world needs golf instructors. Let me explain.

When the astronauts first wore the goggles, their worlds changed. Everything they knew, or thought they knew, was suddenly rearranged. This significant change stressed their nervous systems. Now, if you are like me, you would have taken the goggles off and said "forget it, I don't need this stress, I'm going back to my normal, right-side-up world".

So why does this relate to golf instruction? Because, this is the exact response you experience when you make a golf swing change and you try to play a round of golf and start hitting bad shots. The bad shots and stress caused by the confusion makes your brain revert back to what is comfortable or feels normal. You take off the goggles.

What I didn't tell you about the NASA experiment was the most important part of the experiment. They found, after continuing theses studies, that if the astronauts removed the goggles anytime during the 26 to 30 day period, that they would never adjust to the changes. In other words, by interrupting the brain's rebuilding process, it would go back to the comfortable patterns, just as you do when you play golf after a lesson.

The story about the astronauts is about change. Fortunately, our brains develop patterns and habits and this keeps us alive. But if we have something in our lives that we want to make different, we must observe our current patterns and actively change them until the new change becomes habit. We must put on goggles and most importantly, keep them on!

This winter is an important winter. Why? Because I want you to, as my brother Tim would say, "think outside the box".

While most people think the winter months are a time to take off, away from golf. I believe the opposite. I believe that the winter gives us an opportunity away from playing the game where we can focus specifically on changes we want to make. The winter is a great time to put on the goggles and keep them on.

As an instructor if this winter is like last winter, I will have plenty of time to play golf myself as my students take time off. This is a huge mistake and a complete waste of your precious time for improvement. Why wait until next year to start working on your game? This thinking makes no sense!

I challenge all of you, who desire to play a better game of golf, to take this winter seriously as the most important time that you have to improve. Get busy now and start making plans to visit us this winter. We would love to get out the goggles and get you on your way to the best golf of your life in 2009.

Remember - Always Practice with a Purpose!!

I am so skeptical of any golf web site that touts someone can cut their handicap in 1/2. That may work for someone who has a handicap of 10, 12, or 20. Those people already have golf talent, so it's easy for them to tweak their game sufficiently to lower their handicap. But you can not convince me that Moe's swing or anyone's swing can cut my handicap from 40+ to 20. I spent a ton of money on a PGA pro, hit 100's of range balls, and toiled on the practice area for over 400 hours this year. I broker 100 once. That's pathetic for someone who has worked so hard, so long. Now, I'm broke from golf with nothing to show for it. I thought Moe's swing would be my magin potion, but it hasn't worked either. If someone has any real suggestions, please let me know.

I will let those that have cut their handicaps in 1/2 or much better answer this one. If I answer will sound like "touting" again (as you say)...

My question for you is what have you done to work on Moe's swing? Who have you seen? Or, who has checked what you are doing?

I don't care if you have hit 1,000,000 golf balls - if you don't practice with a purpose or practice correctly - you can actually get worse than when you started...

Brasstax,
You sound like a VERY frustrate golfer. Moe's swing will not be your magic potion nor will any swing. Let me give you a little history: I started playing golf in 1995 at age 40. Being a former athlete, I quickly became very frustrated with the game. In 1999, I went to a 2 day conventional golf school that was a waste of money. I came across Natural Golf in 2001 and Graves Golf Academy in 2004. I attended a GGA 3 day school in 2004. My handicap index was 20. The school was an awesome experience and if you get a chance I would highly recommend it. I have not cut my handicap in half as it is currently 12.4 but I'm enjoying the game. I broke 80 for the first time this year on a resort course and I dropped my scoring average 3 shots. Not huge but I am inproving. If you haven't done so I recommend you do the following: 1.) Make sure your clubs fit you (Tim does a great job) 2. Have the GGA grips on your clubs 3. Have ball and position trainer 4. Have the impact bag 5. The videos 6. Do the PVC drill and finally I just received- Graves putting system. Understand that learning this swing takes time and it is a process and you will improve.

I wasn't trying to be rude to anyone, so please forgive me if it sounded that way. I am not dismissing your advice; I just need to take it all in and see if I am up to the commitment (physically, mentall, and especially financially).

Yes, I am frustrated because this was the year where I finally had the time to learn golf the right way.

Yes, I have practiced with a purpose. My practice routines were clear and precise as to what I wanted to achieve and how I wanted to achieve them. But whatever optimism I had beginning the sessions usually ended up in defeat. But like a crazed gambler, I kept going back, somehow believing that the next practice session had to be better.

But, what you guys are saying is that I need to make another huge financial commitment to try to learn Moe's swing? Based on what you've mentioned above (the academy, club fitting, new grips, new training devices, etc.), what it the total outlay for all this? Again, not to be rude, I just need to know what kind of money we're talking about. I have probably spent $4,000+ on golf this year, and what do I have to show for it? Not much. Thanks for your help. I do truly appreciate it.

You guys probably can't believe how desparate I am to play good golf.

Jeff:

I'll step up as evidence that it can be done. Before I saw the guys I was around a 40. Shooting under 120 was an accomplishment. Now my index ranges between 15 and 17, and I'm not finished. Now, you're looking to break 100 - if you work as hard as you say you did this year, on the right things, you'll be looking for 90 - then 80.

The GGA e-mails always list some of the items they have on sale at the time. Not all are needed immediately, or by every student. I'd say the training club is essential - the grip is the foundation of the swing. Some form of feedback on whether the changes you're making are good is also essential. Video is a great tool - USE IT!!!

On the path - not always on the fairway

Hack (by the way, I sing a great Mack the Knife),

Thanks for the reply. I am still willing to put in the time and effort to acquire a repeatable golf swing. Hopefully, Todd and Tim have some drills one can do in the basement during the winter. My next "on course" opportunity will be mid-March in Sun City, Arizona.

Jeff,

I feel your pain...like many others here I have a similar story. I wouldn't even keep score in the past...I almost quit golf, I wasted money on training aids, lessons but for some reason it just didn't work. The funny thing is I'm a pretty good athlete..played baseball in college and into my 30's....which means nothing in this crazy sport!! It will take time and effort...and some money. It's still golf, there is no "easy" solution. I did spend some $ and took time. The thing is I can still have an ugly round...but I've also broken 90 this year. I feel like I'm knocking on the door to being a pretty good golfer...it will be one year for me next April with this Graves teachings.

I live outside Chicago so I'm in a similar situation for this winter. Start with the basics...grip and set-up. Get a mirror you can use. DO the PVC drill. Like others have said...grip is essential! I've found several times this year my problems were grip related. If you can get a video camera and have some basic computer knowlegdge that will go VERY far. The internet academy is a great deal here...check it out. I believe video is the most effective way to get better....it may cost a few bucks up front, but will save $$ in long run. The free V1 software is nice...for a few bucks more you can a more robust version. I'm fortunate because I was in the IT field for 10 years in my previous life...many of which were dealing high end media software(video/images). So I've really taken the video thing and run with it. One of the great things about this swing and the Graves teaching is there are no "Gimicks"...hell, one of their best training aids is a piece of PVC pipe! Good luck!!

Brasstax,
Scroll up to the top of this page and click on "home". when there go to "more" and click on "featured alumni "on the drop down window. READ MY STORY AND YOU WILL FIND THERE NEVER WAS A WORSE GOLFER THAN ME(I). Today,I reagularly break 85 and ocassionally I break 80. With all due respect I believe that Moe's swing didn't work for you because you were not actually doing it correctly. Therefore as Hacktheknife pointed out all you were doing is practicing doing a bad swing better. That will never work.

The grip is crucial,if you don't have a training club my bet is that your grip is probably wrong. You could hit a million balls with a bad grip and never get better, I know because I literally hit thousands with a bad gtip and got the exact results you did.Once my grip was right,my progress was rapid.

Please understand that I am not chastizing you. I have walked many miles in your shoes. The Moe swing is absolutely the easiest way to strike a golf ball period, and you are not untalented enough to be able to learn it.Anyone can learn this swing if I did. I did and you can too. However you must do it correctly.

Actually, I really believe my grip is proper. Does the training club come with paper or dvd instructions on the proper grip? I have seen some grip videos on the Moe Norman Golf Academy web site. Do their instructions differ from Graves? The last thing I want to do is purchase the training club and STILL not grip it correctly.

Thanks for everyone's help. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it's good for the soul. So, lay the wood (or should I say metal driver?) to me as much as needed. It's nice to know I'm in good company. I hope I can reciprocate sometime soon.

We DO NOT teach the Natural Golf Grip (Moe Norman Golf Academy) - nor do they teach Moe's grip. We teach Moe's grip.

Please read the following - will explain:

Brasstax,
I'm left handed so the training club doesn't work for me. I did buy it for my wife however. If you don't want to purchase the training right now purchase the grips- put them on your clubs and sit in front of the TV during these coming winter months working on the proper grip using the GGA markings. It worked for me.

Brasstax -- I am in the process of moving from my old CG to the Moe Swing taught by GGA. I understand your fustration, and am feeling the same as I attempt to get rid of my old swing and move on. So far, I've made a minimum financial outlay, but what I have done seems to be working. I purchased two of the GGA dvd's, which have a lot of great information and have gotten me started. I also constructed a PVC swing aid (very cheap) which I am using as part of my everyday Moe Swing work out. I think the big hurdle I've moved past is just convincing myself to take the jump and start working with the GGA swing. Financially, I don't see any of the GGA schools in my future. However, there is a lot of great instructional information on the GGA internet sites that can be of great use.

I wish you the best of luck. Just keep moving forward and I believe this swing will work great for you.

If you're a 40 and do not have physical issues (e.g. hands don't hinge, knees are really bad, etc.) or some mental issue (e.g. Charles Barkley), you can cut your handicap to 20 with this swing. If you were a 20, I don't know if you could get it to a 10 with just a swing improvement. I've only dropped my index 30% since finding Graves but my high scores are rare and much lower.

The training club is pretty self-explanatory. You basically can only hold it the correct way. Buy yourself a pvc pipe at the hardware store and start working that drill. And do as dan suggests and invest in a camera and start viewing you swing and view yourself doing the pvc drill. You'll hit the ball better this spring and 20 should be in view. You'll also need to learn how to 2-putt.

Jeff,

You will hear from some great people on this forum - many who have been where you are and know what you are feeling. Many of us HAVE cut our handicaps by AT LEAST 1/2 since coming on board. I will tell you this - no matter what your goals are in this game, TGGS will help you get there. If just breaking 100 is what you seek, they will help you do it. If you want to become a scratch golfer, they can help you do it. The "formula" is perfect - it is just a matter of what you are willing to put into it.

I would suggest starting with a training club package (a great overview DVD comes with this). It is the best place to start. Spend the winter working on your grip and doing the PVC drill. If you are serious about getting really good at this game, you need to condition your body as well. I don't know what shape you are in - but overall strength, core strength and flexibility are MUSTS if you want to play this game correctly. Your "progress" with the swing will be limited by your physical abilities - hard to hear for some, but it is the truth.

If you are truely frustrated and ready to do something about it, you have found the right place. If you just want to enjoy the game of golf and share this wonderful game with a few nice people, this is also the best place to do that.

What ever you decide, good luck. If you want more info or need to "talk this out" more, you can always send me a personal message on this board and I will be happy to get you my email address.

Welcome

Bob Perry

To Tim, Russ, Allen, Bob, Rick, Dan, and everyone else:

If this has any correlation, five years ago (at age 49), I began taking voice lessons from a man who was Robert Goulet's accompanist and spent time on Broadway, etc. In the first year, I couldn't stand having my wife in the house while I rehearsed because I didn't want her to hear my mistakes. She tired of that and purposely sat in on my rehearsals and yelled at me, "Sing!" After three years of lessons and continued work on my own, I have developed a concert-quality voice. After that first year of learning, understanding, and applying the "mechanics" of singing (which are many, to my surprise), I then learned the "art" of singing. If Josh Groban is the equivalent of a scratch golfer, then I would be about an 6-8 handicap.

So, let me ask you this: Will learning Moe's swing be just as similar to my singing development? Am I going to hear a collective "duh" from you guys on this?

Anyway, your encouragement has been helpful and appreciated. I am an immersive learner, where I give everything I have to a particular learning process. That's what golf is to me now. Believe me, I can sing. Now, I want to golf!
