"Little Moe" Signature School
September 2008 Instructional Newsletter
Issue #81

Hello Everyone,

We hope everyone is doing well - looking forward to seeing all those who are attending the Moe Norman Memorial and/or our schools at our Orlando Academy in a few weeks. Haven't been down to Orlando in a few months, looking forward to being back at our Orlando Academy again.

For all those interested in a GGA school/camp early next year - February and March's 2009 schedule has been released. Please see below and please be aware these events will fill up quick.... Let us know if you would like to attend, have questions, etc..
Spreading the word

Help us share the word about Moe Norman with the golf world!

If you find something in this Etip particularly helpful, share it with your friends. Just click button below.

Thank you for your help in spreading the word about Moe Norman's simple and effective swing!

The 4th Annual Moe Norman Memorial is 2 weeks away!!

In 2 weeks - we'll be honoring the man who swing we are all trying to emulate. This will be our 4th year for Moe's Memorial - each previous we have had a wonderful time, and are looking forward to another GREAT TIME!!

For anyone interested - see what other's are saying about our annual Moe Norman Memorial:
http://fuzz2moe.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~8060.asp

FYI - Some of Moe's family will be at the event - as always, we are looking forward to sharing stories about Moe with everyone and his family.

When: September 27th & 28th, 2008
Where: Eagle Creek Golf Club - Orlando, FL - GGA's Orlando home
Who: YOU!!
Cost: $459

It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since we said goodbye to Moe. And we are proud and honored to host the Moe Norman Memorial Outing in his honor. Now only 2 months away, the 4th Annual Moe Norman Memorial will continue the tradition of gathering to honor the legend, and the man who has allowed us all to become better ball strikers.

Whether this is your first time, or if you've been every year, don't wait to reserve your space. This event has become a great reunion each year of Moe Norman fans. Many friendship's have been forged at the "Moe", and we expect this year's event will be no different.

Now to the golf itself. We get many people each year who say they don't want to play because they feel like they aren't "good enough". Friends, this simply isn't the case. This outing is PRIMARILY about meeting fellow Moe golfers, making lasting friendships, and experiencing Moe Norman's legacy. We (GGA) look at it the Moe Memorial is more of an outing/gathering rather than a competitive tournament. This event each year only expands Moe's legacy, and you should be part of it.

Both days are a scramble type format - one day a "scramble" and the other a "scramble". You play on a team with other Moe single axis golfers - format is set up to have a lot of fun and meet other Moe single axis golfers. We have putting, most accurate drive, closest to the pin, and many other contests during the events. Again, all are set up to enhance everyone's enjoyment, but more importantly, to honor Moe and his legacy.

Following/preceding play each day, we will have lunch and hold ball striking and short game clinics for all participants.

To register for the memorial, simply visit our Moe Memorial Page on our website. If you have further questions, please email Scott Renfrow at scottr@swinglikemoe.com.

We look forward to seeing you at the 'Moe'!

Interesting Testimonial about getting better with lack of practice.
Moral of the story - STICK TO THE METHODOLOGY

From Eric B (Pittsford, NY):

I don't often post to this forum as life is real busy for me. I work for a company struggling to stay afloat, I'm going to school at night working towards another masters degree, and my 89 year old mother in law moved in with us a year ago after suffering a stroke (she needs lots of care). This doesn't leave much time for forums (much less practicing golf!). But I felt moved to share some recent success.

A little of my background first. I was around a 19 handicap when I went to my first GGA golf school, a 2 day beginner school around 5 yrs ago. Loved what I saw and heard and more importantly, had a boat load of fun. Since then I have been to a dad/daughter school, and 2 week long build your swing camps. I try to get to one of those week long schools every 3 years or so. For me, they are more of a golf vacation, where I happen to get some expert instruction, as opposed to a golf school. And that is exactly how I approach them. Perhaps that is one of my "training weaknesses", as when I am at those schools, having fun is my first priority and whatever Todd/Tim can get through my head in that limited time I just think of as a bonus, as opposed to being the focus of my week. Probably different than most.

My other big training inhibitor, is that I just can't motivate myself to use video technology. I love using it, seeing it, etc at the schools. It is so cool, and Todd does such a great job with it. I have no doubt video is the key to the quickest learning curve. But it just seems that here at home, when I may only find 5 minutes or so here and there to practice - that I don't want to spend 3 or 4 minutes of that time setting up a camera. Probably me rationalizing my laziness I suppose. And I am just so NOT tech savvy. This is one of those you should do as I say (use the video!) and not as I do moments.

But...I do "stick to the program" in some other areas...I have 2 of their training clubs (the 6 iron and the driver) and try to put my hands on them everyday if only for a minute or so. Grip is so important. I also have the impact bag, which provides another couple of minutes of daily practice. Hitting the impact bag with my training clubs kills two birds with one stone. I also do the PVC drill drill with the bag. It's all great, because I can practice at home whenever I have a few spare moments. And when I do manage to get to the range, I now spend lots of time putting with the string drill and pitching (my weaknesses). With the putting I don't quit until I can make 20 in a row from 3, 6 and 9 feet (alternating to each distance with every putt). If I have gotten anything from the TGGS schools, its the importance of the short game. Thank you for that Tim.

So anyways, these spare moments here and there at home comprise my practice schedule - along with more short game emphasis, and an occasional trip to the range (where I do work on my "over the top" problem Todd has continually pointed out to me through video LOL)

And this what I have experienced as of late:

- Played one of the toughest public courses in our area 2 weeks ago (a 138 slope rating from the whites)- and I shot an 81. Made par on the first seven holes, doubled the 8th, par on the 9th for a 38 on the front. Came back to earth a little on back with a 43, but still a great round for me. Funny thing was, my ball striking was only ok, but my short game was on fire. Of those first 8 pars - I was only on in regulation on 3 greens. The rest were up and downs (two from the sand no less, which I rarely get to practice out of!). 30 putts for the round.

- I also play every Thursday night in a golf league. 16 guys in the league, and I have been low gross for three weeks in a row. I'm hot! In fact, this past week I accomplished a first for me - an even par 36 for nine holes. (2 birds, 2 bogeys, 5 pars). WOW! I would have never imagined this with my limited golf practice time. Ball striking was on, and I was aided by a chip in birdie from about 30 yds of the green. Only needed 12 putts for the other eight holes. My handicap in this league (which can get pretty competitive), is a 4 for nine holes. Guys are starting to ask me what this "Moe Norman" swing is all about.

So this is just a testimonial to T/T while I am still on my golf high (I may be due for a crash shortly). They will teach you something. They will get you better. I have seen it in my own game AND this is all despite me leaving a lot on the table by under utilizing video technology.

A big thanks to Graves Golf School!

Ball Position

by Todd Graves

We have been receiving a lot of questions surrounding our webinars lately. One that came up in the last webinar was about ball position. As we have discussed before, ball position is critical to good ball striking and even more important for consistency.

Before we discuss distance from the ball - please review posture and stability - as when you are working on ball position - we want to make sure and maintain good posture and stability.

To see pictures and past etip please click HERE.

Ball Position: (See the full sized pictures HERE)

First - Ball Position is Based on Club design and the position of the lead shoulder. As you will see, ball position should and can be checked compared to the lead shoulder and can be compared to your feet as long as the width of your feet is correct.

With a 9 iron, notice that the ball position is 5 inches inside of the lead heel and, because of my stance width, behind the lead shoulder. This creates a proper position for the proper strike for a 9 iron.

With a longer club - 5 iron, you can see that the ball position does not move however, the widening of the stance moves the lead shoulder allowing for a more forward ball position at the strike of the 5 iron.

With a 3 wood the ball position has moved even further forward relative to the lead shoulder as the stance has widened.

With the driver and the ball on a tee, not only is the stance wider the ball position can be placed further forward toward for a higher launch. Moe used this ball position when he was hitting his 7* driver and wanted to hit a high ball flight. Notice the how high the ball is teed up and ball position (further forward than for normal ball flight).

Conclusion - as you see, the ball position compared to the lead shoulder - from the 9 iron to the 3 wood changes very little. As the club gets longer the stance width must increase. The increase of width is to maintain stability throughout the swing. As the club gets longer, your swing speed will increase, thus to maintain balance and stability, your width of stance needs to increase.

Now, compare the ball position to your feet. As you width increases, the ball position will be more forward in your stance. The length of club will allow you to be able to reach the ball. The problem lies in the fact, when your width of stance is too wide and you can't reach the ball. This typically causes "sliding" to the ball or too much movement in your swing and ultimately inconsistent ball striking, a lot of miss hits, etc..
