What kind of workout?
I do strength training and find that I need at least a few hours between the workout and the start of a round. When I first started working out in February, I needed to give it at least a day before I golfed.
BTW, to my Moeniac friends -- I've lost 40 pounds since school and nearly 50 since February 1st. Weight down -- handicap flat.

I am no expert, but since you asked....
1. If you mean a full work out - and not just warming up and stretching - it might take too much out of you to do it before a round of golf. Working out too close to bed time might keep you awake. you need to experiment and find out what makes you feel best.
2. More important than "when" is "how often". consistancy is the key - build up slowly and stick with it.
3. stretching is the most overlooked aspect of working out. you can't stretch enough (I need to stretch more!)
Just a few idol thoughts. |

I work out from November to March...when the weather warms I am golfing, gardening or doing other yard work so I can't answer your question. As the pounds begin to go on (as like right now) I begin again. Each year I say I am going to continue with my workouts in the summer...doesn't happen. I always stretch though. It used to be that I could not get my left leg over my right knee when sitting to put on a sock, it is no problem now.
Russ, you have lost 40 pounds since the ABYGC in March!!!!??? You the man, watch out for the strong winds in Chi-town, they may blow you away. LOL

| Steve, I agree with you totally. Off season work out, then when summers goodies are over, like now, its back to the grind. Matt |

Feelgood59, I do Tai Chi everyday and stretch a lot. Never feel tight on the golf course because I really do not lift anything heavier than a beer can. LOL Of course you are a lot younger than I and can probably lift a lot more without getting too tight.
Russ, Wow, you must be a shadow of your old self. Obviously, you must not be eating your own wonderful cooking unless you are cooking lite. You sure has will power my brother. HeyMoe |

feelgood59, Like most things I do,I do them radically-swing like Moe,side saddle putting etc. Therefore,it's consistant that my workouts are out of the box as well.I own a ROM machine,a four minute workout that busts your butt.I do it 5 days a week first thing in the morning. ROM stands for Range Of Motion and provides the combo of aerobics, resistance and stretching all in one.
My opinion is that if your workout does not include stretching then it could be detremental to your golf swing. However,if flexibility is integrated into it,then it should be very beneficial. Strength and flexibility are good golf training goals.
Eddie, are you lifting the beer cans during Tai Chi or after?LOL

I prefer to work out at night and play golf in the morning. If I have to do one thing immediately after the other I play golf first.
My summer priority is golf, however, I weight train 4 times per week (split schedule doing the upper body Monday/Thursdays & lower body Tuesday/Friday)
My winter priority is weight training 5-6 days per week. After that I practice my golf positions and drills at an indoor range.
It is very important to cycle your weight traing secessions. Meaning do not always train heavy and to complete exhaustion. In the summer I do a more breif workout with a set amount of sets/reps and rarily work to the point of muscle failure leaving me more energy for my number one priority. In the winter I often train to muscle failure with heavier weight and at times super or compound sets.
LOTS OF STRETCHING BEFORE AND AFTER WEIGHT TRAINING!
Probalby to much info...sorry about that. |

Chuck, Is that ROM machine the real deal? I have always been skeptical about it.
Russ, You must be thinner than me. Awesome. Has the weight loss affected distance at all?

Wells, Yes it's the real deal.Don't let the 4 minutes fool you,it's all you can do-and not very pleasent. The workout is awesome and very intense. If you had to do 5 minutes you probably wouldn't make it.I hate it with a passion but it's hard to not do,because I don't have time is not a valid excuse.Very aerobic, can't talk after a workout, engages 80% of your muscles versus about 10-15 % on a normal machine-stair stepper, treadmill etc.Best of all full range of motion and a great stretch. However, not for the faint of heart,a very manly workout.

I started to workout but when I started to lift the weights I found out that they were heavy. Has anyone noticed how heavy weights are? I said the heck with this, I can't be lifting all those heavy things, I have stuff to do and I'm going to need this back for a bit longer and I'm feared that if I lift those heavy things that I won't be able to lift the heavy things at work. So I went and got an ice cream cone instead. I had no problem lifting that ,I might add. My wife is a gym rat and I figure she lifts enough for the both of us, and I don't want to be greedy. I'll let someone else have a chance at em. Doc |

| Chuck - I am intested in a ROM exercise machine. Can someone at my age (67) use it efficiently. It seems like it is almost too good to be true.If you have time, please drop me an e-mail.Thanks |
