I love to demo new clubs, but am becoming frustrated in looking for a new driver. It seems that more and more manufacturers are extending the length of their drivers. Adams, Ping, Nickent, Taylor-made(Burner), Nike,Mizuno(MX 560)and probably others that I can't remember right now are all offering their stock drivers at 45 3/4" length. If I remember correctly, I am recommended to be between 44 1/2 and 45". I know that I can order a custom length driver, and hope the swingweight is close to that of the driver as regularly made, but it is difficult to know if the driver I am demo'ing will compare to a driver significantly shorter than the stock length now being offered.
Do you custom order, accept stock, accept stock and choke down, or shorten the length of your driver? What companies do the best job with custom orders in maintaining the proper flex and swingweight?

| I recently bought the Cobra L4V, but since I like my driver at 44.5", I just cut it down at the butt end and then added weight to compensate for the swingweight change. Each 1/2" cut from the butt end is about 3 swingweight points, and will require 6 grams of weight added to the head to compensate. Although not the best looking, the best way to add weight is with lead tape on the head, as it allows you to more closely match the original center of gravity. I added weight with tungsten powder instead; to do that I weighed out 12 grams (for 1" length cut) and poured it down the shaft end, then jammed a small cork (available from golfsmith or golfworks) to hold the powder in place. |
