I have just added a 3 utility club to my bag with a 15* loft. I also have a 3-wood with a 15* loft. As the weather has been pretty lousy in Central Ohio I have not had a chance to hit them outside yet to verify distances. Should I get the same distance out of both these clubs or is there a difference being a utility vs a 3-wood ?

I'll bet the utility/hybrid is shorter in shaft length. Because of that, it should be easier to hit well and (all other things being equal) shorter in distance. But, all things are not equal. You may hit the sweet spot of the hybrid more often and find it is longer.

Let us know when the weather gets better.

I hit my 3-wood longer and less straight than my 3-hybrid. Rarely hit the 3-wood as a result. That may change this year as I groove a better swing and learn to hit a 3-wood off the fairway.

3 woods (and all fairway woods) are built to roll.

Hybrid based clubs (long iron replacements) are built to fly "high" and stop (faster than fairway woods). They are built to replace long irons and typically hit on approach shots to greens, wanting to stop them fairly fast.
