Game improvement clubs all seem to have wider sole widths. I don't hear anyone talk about how (or if) the wider sole helps. Who would need a wider sole in their irons? How is the wider sole used in the swing? What type of player would be better off with a narrower sole?

Hoping for success without hard work is like trying to harvest without planting.

Wider sole clubs are made for those who take mid to not divot when they hit their irons and or have mid to low swing speeds (and/or a combination of both). The wider sole of the club has more weight on the bottom of the club - hence more weight under the ball at impact helping get the ball off the ground easier.

For those who take a good "strong" divot - they won't like the wider sole on their low to mid irons as the club will tend to "bounce" off the ground and will make it hard to pinch and create spin on these irons.

The wider soles type clubs are becoming extremely popular and are really helping many golfers who tend to "pick" the ball at impact.

A great club and example of these is: http://www.adamsgolf.com/ir_idea_a3OS.htm
