GRAVES GOLF ACADEMY
"Little Moe" SIGNATURE SCHOOL
NOVEMBER E-TIP NEWSLETTER
ISSUE #71

Howdy Everyone (good old "Okie" hello..),

Sending out a quick etip as we are heading down to Florida again tomorrow for our last schools of '07.

Amazing how fast 2007 went by - also amazing how many students we saw this year. Remember a few years ago, when we were only seeing a few students a week...... by end of this year - of our last 21 schools, 20 were sold out. To me - sounds like the word of Moe is spreading!!! Thank you everyone, for all your support and like we always say - "Keep Spreadin' the Word".

*****************
Topics in the Etip:

1.  Where Do I Begin?

2.  Last Minute Special

3.  Practice Tip - Tribute to Nick Weslock

4.  Moeism

5. Moe Trivia Time / Contest - Win a GGA 3 Day School

6.  GGA Schedule - Update through May 2008

7.  Club Special - Buy Adams BUL Driver - BUL FW wood FREE - ending next week.

WHERE DO I BEGIN???

In the past couple of months, we have seen a LARGE increase in those signing up for our newsletters - visiting our website and chatroom and emailing and/or calling us for more information. This is AWESOME!!!! We can only assume this increase has come from our new videos on Youtube, Google Videos, rise in different search engines, and all you "spreading the word of Moe". What ever the reason(s) - We LOVE it!!!

Now to answer some of those questions - Where do I begin?? How do I start learning Moe's Swing? How to I get more information about the single axis swing? And many others....

For all those interested, we strongly recommend to examine what we consider the "Path to Great Golf". We (the GGA) have worked for years establishing what we believe is the path to great golf.

To see this path, please go to: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=767124432326&pr=The_Path_To_Great_Golf&=SID
And - please don't hesitate to call or email us anytime.

Good Luck - Please let us know what we can do for you.

*******************
LAST MINUTE SPECIAL:

We have a last minute cancellation in our Build Your Game Camp next week (November 12th - 16th). We have a spot open to anyone interested - if you can make it "last minute" - give me an email at timg@swinglikemoe.com or timkgraves@aol.com and I'll be happy to work out a "special" with you. I know it is very little warning - because of that, happy to work out something with you if you can make it next week. Thought I'd throw this out as we won't be teaching a school/camp again for 2 months... and know some have shown interest in a camp/school before then.

PRACTICE TIP:

Nick Weslock

Assume many of you have heard by now, Nick Weslock (one of Moe's closest friends) passed away last week. Wanted to "dedicate" this Practice Tip to him.
Some of you may have met Nick at our past Moe Norman Memorial "Coming Home" at Rockway Golf Club this past July. We are greatful Nick was able to attend and get a chance to speak to everyone at our Saturday night gathering. Was very special listening to him talk about the times he had spent with Moe. I can tell you first hand, in the last 5 years of Moe's life, everytime I saw Moe he was with Nick. They were close friends and life long golfing buddies.

Here are a few pages from Tim O'Connor's book The Feeling of Greatness - The Moe Norman Story about Nick Weslock.

.... "I can't ever remember Moe sleeping in a bunker. There was always a place for him. He didn't have much money. Someone would often pay his hotel bill."
That someone would often be Nick Weslock.

In the 1947 Canadian Open in Toronto, U.S. Professional Clayton Heafner was paired with 29-year-old Nick Weslock, the hot-shot Canadian Amateur.

Heafner watched as time after time Weslock's wedge shots bit into the greens at Scarboro Golf Club and spun back to within birdie range, author Jim Barclay recounts in Golf in Canada: A History. In the third round, Weslock fired a 65, the lowest score of the day and Heafner filed a protest that Weslock's wedge must have had illegal grooves. But the RCGA rules committee found that it was quite legal. It was the man - not the club - working the magic. Weslock finished fourth behind winner Bobby Locke of South Africa. No Canadian amateur has ever come so close to winning the country's national championship.

Barclay says that tournament was probably the genesis of Weslock's nickname Nick the Wedge. Jimmy Demeret said Weslock was one of the three best wedge players in the world. He considered turning professional, but by 1951 he was not only two-time Ontario Amateur champ, he was also partner of an auto parts manufacturing company in Burlington. When U.S. tour pro Al Waltrous learned how much money Weslock earned from his business activities, he talked him out of turning pro.

Weslock is arguably one of the world's best amateurs to ever play the game. His sparkling career includes four Canadian Amateur championships, four invitations to the Masters, eight Ontario Amateur titles and six Canadian Senior championships. He was low amateur in the Canadian Open an incredible 16 times, a record that will likely never be broken. He also played on 17 Canadian international amateur teams.

Around 1946, Weslock was playing a tournament at Rockway when Lloyd Tucker [Head Professional] fixed him up with a caddie named Moe Norman. Even though Weslock was one of Canada's top amateurs and 11 years older, the teenager turned out to be a rather forthright little fellow, as Weslock found out on the par three 16th hole. They stood on the tee, a little breeze blowing in their faces. They had about 145 yards to the pin.
"This is a seven-iron shot," Weslock said.
"No, it's an eight-iron," Moe replied.
"You sure?"
"You hit the seven-iron and you'll carry your bag from here in."

Weslock blinked hard, more than a bit shocked, but the kid was so definitive, and he'd been bang-on clubbing him all the way round. Weslock took the eight and socked it three feet from the hole. "He was right. He was always right. I won the tournament," Weslock said. "I was impressed by his knowledge of the game."

They've been best of friends ever since. There was an instant rapport between them, even though you couldn't imagine two more different people. A barrel-chested man with Popeye arms, Weslock was meticulous about the state of this clubs, which were always gleaming and free of dirt. While most golfers sported which and gray, he favored a rainbow of colours topped off by flashy checkered caps and immaculately shined shoes.

Weslock was supremely confident in his golf and in himself, and often came off cocky to those who didn't know him. He loved to gab with the press. A very intelligent man, Weslock kept fastidious notes about his golf game, swing thoughts and observations, anything that could help him in a pinch. Except for the brilliance of his golf, Moe was a polar opposite in almost every respect.

As Moe became a top player on the Ontario Amateur circuit, Weslock was a good friend to have. He would give Moe equipment and clothes occasionally, loan him a few dollars here and there, but Weslock was a bigger help as Moe's trusted advisor.

The dapper Weslock was always after Moe about his "deportment" - the importance of being clean-shaven and well groomed, keeping his clothes neat and clean and matching colours and patterns. Weslock didn't like it either when fans would snicker at Moe's clashing outfits, which made him appear clownish.

Weslock also acted as a buffer between moe and many players and officials. He'd tell people to give Moe some slack, explaining that Moe was very shy. Weslock was the first golfer of significant social standing to go to bat for Moe. "I always defended him. They didn't appreciate what great talent he had."

Moe Trivia Time - Contest

Time for Moe Trivia again.

For all those "new" to our etip - we try to do this every few months.

Question:

In 1956, at Moe's first appearance in the Master's Tournament, Moe withdrew from the competition because of "blistered, red and raw" hands. Moe's hands became "blistered, red and raw" because he had hit so many practice balls the day before after receiving a tip from a fellow pro.

1. How many holes did Moe play in the Master's before he withdrew? (Hint - be careful on this one... not what most think...)

2. Who gave Moe the golf tip on the driving range the lead to Moe hitting all the balls?

For each question answered correctly, you will be entered in the contest / drawing. You can only be entered a maximum of 2 times (answering # 1 and # 2 correctly).

Before the next etip - we will draw from all those who answered correctly, there will be 3 winners:

1st place: GGA 3 Day School of their choice.

2nd place: GGA Training Grip Club (or equivalent if already own).

3rd place: GGA Instructional DVD

Please email your "guesses / answers" to timkgraves@aol.com .

Good Luck -

Will announce winners and the answers in the next etip.
