FIRST GGA COUPLE'S SCHOOL / FUTURE COUPLE'S SCHOOLS.....

This past week, we held our first 3 day (full days) couple's school at our academy in Orlando, FL. The school sold out in just a few weeks and we are happy to report back, it was a GREAT success and A LOT of fun. We would like to thank all those that attended and thought for the best "GGA Report" - would share an email we received from one of the attendee's:
Gary S (Summerville, SC): "Well here is the 3 day couples school report as promised. We drove down early from Charleston, SC to Orlando on 3/29 to catch the last Braves training camp game at Disney Sports complex. (lost 8 - 2 to Cleveland). After the game we drove out to Eagle Creek and checked out the course and area. Very Nice. Day One started off on 3/30 @ 9:00am, got there around 8:30 and dropped the bags off, this is the only time we handled our bags the entire school, GGA keeps your clubs secure and have them where they need to be at all times. Sweet! Went in and GGA has their own conference room where they have lectures and lunch. First off we met the staff, which for this school was Todd, Tim, Scott, Brent, Ben, and a special treat Shannon Dowdy an LPGA member and Bio everything, if you hurt she could probably fix you, or needed to know what muscle or bone did what, she knew! Check her out @ http://www.golfwithshannon.com/teaching.htm

Now for the cast of the First Couples 3 Day Adventure: (spelling may be off, but oh well)
Sharron & Don - Charlotte, NC - 1st timers
Julia & Bill - The Villages, FL - Both Alumni
Andi & George (geo) - Washington State - George, Alumni
Mary & David - Vail, CO - Both Alumni
Kathy & Michal - Quebec, Canada - 1st timers

Us, Julie & Gary - Charleston, SC - 1st timers

So you can see they had us covered, 6 teachers - 6 couples! After introductions and the daily ordering of lunch (excellent selection and very good) we had an overview of Moe's swing and what we would be covering that day. Went down and got on shuttle carts and were ferried over to the GGA private range where our bags were waiting for us behind our mirrors and everyone had an impact bag, yardstick, PVC pipe and a BIG bucket of balls at their station. Awnings were set up and chairs for outside lectures and the video taping. Todd then showed us the grip, set up and the PVC drill, then off we go to our stations and commence to do the PVC drills with the instructors walking the line and helping as needed. After a little while of that we were told to grab a P wedge and Putter, get on the buggy it was lunch time and we would be on the putting green afterward. After a fine lunch and many tales of Moe and golf in general it was back to the grindstone, I mean putting green. It tried to rain, but only drizzled a few minutes, not enough to stop us. On the green was ta da the string line set up! After a putting rundown by Tim we were all given our very own string line to set up and to keep. (nice touch) After everyone had personal instruction and faults analyzed, we went on to chipping and everyone then had a chance to hit some balls and receive more personal instruction. We then loaded up and went back to the range for a Todd lecture on the impact bag and holding positions. Then everyone to their stations and smack the bag with observation and help getting into positions. That was the end of day one, the only balls I hit were chipping to the green! Off to TGIF's and cold brew and a steak.

Day 2 started @ 8:30am with the lunch order and lecture/story time from Tim on short game stats, then over to the range and Todd's lecture on the Driver and iron play. We get to hit balls today! They split the couples up on the range today so Shannon can give some kind of women's secrets to the ladies. After some PVC drills and impact bag smacks, we start hitting 6 irons and drivers. I personally have path and early release issues to work on, but even the alumni have some issues so I don't feel too bad. Off to lunch and more fine food and tales of Moe and T&T on the tournament trail. Then back to the lecture tent and Tim explains the pitch shot and sand play. Then over to an excellent practice green with bunkers and set tees for certain distance pitches. Wouldn't you know it but Tim designed that portion of the practice area! Way to go Tim, well done! Anyway we are still split guys and gals and go to our respective bunkers for some hit the line drills and then try to blast some balls out. Found out I was not as good a bunker player as I had tricked myself into believing, I guess the people I play with at home are just worse! I will be doing some serious hit the line drills back home. Then on to pitching and club selection which had the trick question: Tim "If you want to make the ball travel farther, what do you do" Us - accelerate more, hit it harder, place back in stance, etc... All wrong, take more club! Duh! So after some pitching and hands on instruction it is back to the range and hit some balls with whatever club you want to work on. And Todd starts the video lessons for us to take home on DVD. They wheel out the Demo Carts full of Callaway, Cobra, Adams clubs and some Titleist clubs and Vokey wedges and tell us to hit what we want, try em out. That's what they are there for. Good thing, Andi is a real beginner and did not even bring clubs to school so Shannon and Tim made her a set out of the Demo clubs! Service with a smile! We finish up hot and tired and will hit the course at 7:30am the next day for on course instruction. Off to UNO's and some brew's and Chicago deep dish pizza. No problem getting to sleep.

Day 3, bright and early on the course's driving range @ 7:30 am for half an hour to stretch, warm up, and order lunch. Shannon goes over some easy warm up exercises that we all can do to stretch out before we play and we should do anytime before play. No lecture today, we split up guys and gals and we follow Brent out to hole 17 and go over greenside bunker play and then some chipping with our 9 irons. Be sure and walk up and look at the green before attempting either shot. We all agreed on a spot to land a 9 and roll up to the hole from the rough but did not take a small rise into account and ended up chipping a good 6 - 8 yds. past our spot to get it up the hill to the flag. Then to #15 and Tim. We went over tee box alignment, 1st tee jitters, picking out a spot in the sky to aim at and did some humming. Then said where we were going to hit and smacked a couple drivers. We then went down to 130 out and talked wind, elevation, shape of green, hazards and general course management. We then fired 3 or 4 balls at the green, then on to # 18 and met Todd on the tee and had more discussion on alignment, ball placement on tee, and then hit one drive. We then went down to the fairway bunker and got a good lesson on getting out of it. Be sure and get enough loft to clear the lip! We had an early (11:30) lunch and then back to the range to work on what we wanted while Scott & Tim did club fittings on everyone and Todd finished up the video lessons. Then people started to drift out around 2:00pm, planes to catch, and the such.

Summary, I know it was three days but it was over in a flash. The staff is such fun to be around and you get so much information the time flies by. I was sure glad I had my camcorder! Now I know why there are so many returning Alumni, because its just plane (get it) fun to do! Probably half don't need more instruction, they just like the camaraderie! I know I will be returning but that's because I suck and will need the instruction! Seriously, both Julie and I now have a clear plan of what we need to work on to improve our games and with a little hard work on our parts I truly believe we can have a swing for a lifetime of golf enjoyment. Thanks to Todd, Tim, and all the staff for a great weekend. I know I held off WAY too long to take a school as I am more of a hands on learner, I have all the DVD's, training aids etc... but for me there is no substitute for having Todd actually place his hands on you and place you in the positions you need to be in until you get it. And for you fence sitters out there reading this, if there is any way you can swing it, get to a school, it is money well spent and you will not regret a moment of it."
Gary S.

Future Couple's Schools.... We had such a good time teaching this school (especially teaching the ladies... sorry guys, but ladies are always easier to teach....) we are already planning future couple's schools. We are planning to have the same staff at future schools (including Shannon) - we just need to make arrangements and scheduling a few months in advance.

If you might be interested in attending - please contact either myself (timkgraves@aol.com) or Scott (scottr@swinglikemoe.com) and let us know your interest. When you email, please also let us know where you would rather attend - at our Orlando Academy or our Oklahoma City Academy. We will use this information in planning future events (in the "near" future).

Again - would like to thank all those who attended our FIRST GGA Couple's School and look forward to seeing many additional couple's in the near future.

PRACTICE TIP: "SUCCESS"

By: Tim Graves, PGA

Before I begin, want to send a big Congratulations to Zach Johnson (2007 Master's Champion). Todd and I played on the mini tour with Zach for 3 years on the NGA Hooter's tour - Zach is from Cedar Rapids, IA and graduated from Drake University. Remember when he first came out of Drake, he came to the mini tours and we were told how good he was. Todd and I played a lot of golf with Zach - he missed his first 7 cuts on the Hooter's Tour - we all assumed he was just "another flash in the pan..." Yeah right..... Congrats Zach...

This past week, I was watching a special on HBO about John Wooden, famous UCLA basketball coach. Considered one of the greatest (if not the greatest) coaches of all time. I assume many of you know Coach Wooden's history (much better than myself), which includes: In 27 years as Bruin coach, his teams registered 620 wins, and only 147 losses while earning far more national honors than any other university. Under Wooden, UCLA won an unprecedented 10 NCAA championships, including seven consecutive (1966-73). Included in the string is one of the most amazing win streaks in all of sports, 38 straight NCAA tournament victories. In addition, there is the all-time NCAA consecutive winning-streak record of 88 games over four seasons, which included consecutive 30-0 seasons in 1971-72 and 1972-73. UCLA also won 149 of 151 games in Pauley Pavilion during his Bruin tenure. John Wooden is the only coach to compile four undefeated seasons of 30-0 and his Bruin teams captured 19 conference championships (the record of which Wooden is most proud).

A couple of points struck me as I watched the special. Why was Wooden so successful? Why were his teams so consistent? What bread the consistency? How can we relate this to what we do in our golf games / teachings....

One of the really cool stories that was told in the special, was told by many of his famous past players (such as Bill Walton, Jeff Bridges, etc..). They described the annual ritual all the players went through at their first yearly practice.

Imagine a room full of the top players in the country. The best of the best of the best college players (and all American high schools, then freshmen at UCLA) sitting in a room ready to begin the journey at UCLA. In walks Coach Wooden.

What is he going to tell them? What is he going to expect?

Coach Wooden looks at the team. He tells them to take their socks and shoes off. He asks them to put their socks back on. He tells them to try again. And again, and again. Finally, after a few tries, he shows them the proper way to put on basketball socks. (As described by Bill Walton). Snug over the toes, rolled over the center of the foot, then the heel, then pulled tight over the calves. The players do this over and over until the master putting their socks on.

Next, they put on their basketball shoes. They lace them up. Wooden tells them to try again, and again and again.

Finally, after a while, he shows them the proper way to put basketball shoes on. You put them on, then lace from the bottom up. One lace at a time. Pulling the bottom lace tight, then the next, then the next, until you reach the top - pull tight and tie. Imagine 15 of the best college basketball players of the time learning how to put socks and shoes on. Coach Wooden goes over this process again and again until the all master putting on their socks and shoes correctly. After the last person masters this process, Coach Wooden looks at his players and says, "You have now mastered the first fundamental of great basketball, putting your socks and shoes on correctly. Putting them on correctly will keep you from getting blisters. If you get blisters, you can not play basketball. No matter how great you think you are, with blisters on your feet, you are nothing."

I saw this and about feel out of my chair!! (In fact, they were showing Bill Walton and others putting on their dress shoes today - they still did it Wooden's way... every time.)

What a great metaphor to what we do. Without the proper fundamentals of Moe's Single Axis Golf Swing - you've got nothin' (As Moe even said, "Without a proper Set Up, you ain't got nothin'").

Couple of questions to ask yourself...

1. How good are your fundamentals?
2. Have you mastered the basic fundamentals of Moe's Single Axis Swing?
(Too many golfers get too tied up with details and forget about the fundamentals..)

Start with these fundamentals:
1. The grip. How good is your grip? Have you mastered the proper grip so as you are working on the rest of your swing, you are not compensating for an improper/poor grip?

To see more about the proper grip see our Online Instruction page and see the 'Advanced Grip Instruction' slideshow. If you have questions about your grip and want a check system - you might want to consider the training grip club.. we have sold 1000s of the clubs and it has done a lot of good for many who have used it. A wonderful check system to master the proper grip.

2. Set up. Next to look at is your set up. Is your lead arm above your trail? Is there a straight line from your lead shoulder to your club head? Is there a straight line (from the back view) from your club head through the lower part of your trail forearm?

To see more about proper set up see our Online Instruction page and see the "Posture and Stability / Ideal Setup slideshow.

3. Back Swing. Do you have a proper backswing. Is the club on plane in the backswing? Do you hinge you hands/wrists at the appropriate point?

To see more about proper back swing see our Online Instruction page and see the "Backswing" slideshow.

4. Impact - Are you facing ball at impact? Are your shoulders, knees and feet square to the ball at impact? Are your hips "open/turned" at impact? Are you hands leading the ball at impact?

To see more about the proper impact position, see our Online Instruction page and see the "Practicing with the Leverage Bag" slideshow.

These are core fundamentals of Moe's Single Axis Swing. I bring these up again, because we see so many golfers (single axis golfers and others) who think they have certain problems in their swing, when it really comes down to improper fundamentals.

Proper fundamentals are a key to a consistent swing and consistent ball striking. Never ASSUME your fundamentals are good, check, check and check often.

A second part of Coach Wooden's story surrounded his "Pyramid of Success". This was an model he developed to breed/teach success in his players. It involved such things as Poise, Confidence, Condition, Skill, Self Control... a model in which is players/assistant coaches studied to condition success in themselves and the program. You can see the model at: http://graphics.ocsn.com/schools/ucla/graphics/pyramid-success-lg.gif

We at the GGA have created our own "Pyramid of Success" for our students. It is called our "7 Principles of Golf Improvement".

Todd and I created the 7 principles to help our students find and have ongoing success/improvement in their golf games. Using the 7 principles is a method to work on the ENTIRE game, not just parts. Remember, you are only as good as your worst part of your game.

Review of the GGA 7 Principles of Golf Improvement:
1. Develop a Sound, Repeatable, Powerful Swing of Ease based on Moe Norman's Golf Swing. (Single Plane / Straight Line Motion).
2. Develop an efficient Short Game (50% up and down).
3. Become a good Putter (Under 30 putts per round).
4. Build or buy Clubs That Fit your game.
5. Learn to Play on the course using developed skills. (Course Management).
6. Learn How to Practice efficiently.
7.Learn How to Think.

Where are your strengths? Where are your weaknesses?

You must work on your ENTIRE game, not just parts if you want to see improvement.

This doesn't mean you have to spend hours and hours every day, you need to speed focused practice on areas of current weaknesses in your game._Doing this, will show improvement - GUARANTEED.

To see more about our 7 principles please 7 Principles page on the website.

In conclusion - No matter whether you are learning basketball from a master coach like John Wooden, or trying to "shave a few strokes" off your game with the help of the Graves Golf Academy - there are common principles everyone must use to see consistent improvement that will "last" over time.

Some of these priniciples include - Mastering the Fundamentals. Without proper fundamentals, you will always be hoping or guessing?

Another is to have a method to getting better. Do you make it guess work? TOO MANY GOLFERS ARE HOPING AN WISHING TO GET BETTER WITH NO METHOD TO THEIR "MADNESS". We suggest using our 7 Principles of Golf Improvement - a method to improving your entire game SIGNIFICANTLY.

If you are interested in our "Path to Great Golf" - Please see the suggested Path HERE .

We understand "Success" in their golf game is different for everyone. For one, it may be shooting a shot better than yesterday, for another it might be hitting it straight 2 times in a row, for a third it might be cutting their handicap in half in a couple of months. But, no matter your definition, YOU MUST HAVE A METHOD to get there. We ask you stop guessing, use our principles to golf improvement and start to see the results you are looking for.

Good Luck - Remember - Always Practice with a Purpose

"Moeisms"

Was watching our "Moe Clinic" (we show at all our golf schools) and picked up a few new Moeisms... Here's one of them:

Moe Norman: "I get there with no hope or fear, just a feeling of sureness."

Please feel free to comment on this or email any of your favorite "Moeism's" to us if you'd like to share with others....
