THANK YOU STUDENTS AND EAGLE CREEK STAFF

We just got back from our last trip to our Orlando Academy for a few months - since February 1st - we saw close to 250 students between our schools, camps, and the Moe Norman Memorial.  We would like to thank all those that attended our events and would also like to send a special thanks to the staff at Eagle Creek Golf Course (home of our academy) and in particular Gary Piotrowski, Eagle Creek GM.  All those that attended know how special Eagle Creek is and also know how well the staff takes care of anyone wearing a "G"....  (one of the first things we tell our students.. keep those "G" name tags and hats on... you'll be treated like royalty... Eagle Creek proves this everyday).  Again - thanks to all those that attended an event at our Eagle Creek location and we hope to see everyone else soon, whether this summer in Delaware, Connecticut, Chicago, Oklahoma City, San Diego, or next fall back at Eagle Creek.

DELAWARE / CONNETICUT - HERE WE COME!!

In 2 1/2 weeks we (the entire GGA staff, Todd, Scott, Brent R. & Brent E. and myself (Tim))  will be leaving for our Dover, DE and East Haddam, CT schools.  This is the only time we will be in the NE U.S. this year.  Again - the only time.... I repeated this as every year, the week or two after the schools, we always get calls asking when we will be back....  next year...  the closest we will be to these locations in 2006 is Chicago in July.

Again - if you are interested in attending one of our schools, whether it be one day (intermediate, advanced or on course/continued advanced), a 3 day school (all three listed) or 2 day alumni school, in DE or CT please give us a a call or email as soon as possible.  The DE school has 3 spots remaining and the CT school has 1.

Dates:
Dover, DE - May 20th - 22nd (3 day school - can be broken into individual days)
Dover, DE - May 23rd - 24th (2 day alumni school)
East Haddam, CT - May 26th - 28th (3 day school - can be broken into individual days)

Tough Love #2 Email Responses:

Here are a few of the great responses we had to last month's "Tough Love #2" Email.
If you didn't get a chance to read it - you can go to: http://fuzz2moe.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~5568.asp

Bill A. (Ankorage, AK):   "Dear Tim,  I enjoyed today's E-Tip.  I totally understand the false expectations of quick fixes.  One of the most empowering ideas that I took home with me last year was how to practice. I had watched the DVD on practice, which enlightened me the A and B type of practice.  But being at camp helped clear any confusion there was on how and why you practice that way (I just finished read "Range Rats" by Roger Maltbie). The break down of time spent on each facet.  If anyone thinks that this kind of practice will have immediate results, then they do not understand golf or practice.  But if you take a big picture view and realize by practicing each part of the game (irons, pitching, driving, putting and chipping) equally, they are all improving together and then conceptualize how much better your are going to be one, two or three months down the road doing this every time you practice.  You have to feel confident and sense of strength that you are building a monster golf game.   Then when all of the parts of the game click and are there, you are not surprised, because that is how you've been practicing and you are reaping what has been sowed.

That was my mantra all of last summer.  I was never tempted to just practice one part of the game.  I was practicing my total game.

When I left camp last year I was working on the take away and hand position as it relates to the club face.  I spent all summer working on it.  I may have worked on the down swing a couple of times, but I was still working on the take away up to the end of golf season and into the indoor winter drills.  I sent a tape to Todd in August and got it back with work still to be done on the back swing.  Change and improvement takes time. I know I will eventually move on to the down swing and the follow through, but I can't get ahead of myself.

The path to improvement is a journey, and you got to love the ride!  See you in a couple of weeks."
Take care, Bill

Constantine "Sonny" T. (Kentwood, MI):   "Dear Tim,  Read your article.  I am a retired high school counselor and wrestling coach.  I used to have a 10,000 Club for my wrestlers.  I used to tell the kids if you practice a move 10,000 times you will really have it down pat.  I used to stay after practice with some of my best kids as they did just that.  I can count the kids that did hit 10,000 on one hand, but very few people could stop their move once they started.  I've only been playing golf for three years now. I'm having fun.  I'm kind of different.  I LIKE to practice.  I can't get anyone my age to go out with me to practice.

One other thing.  I am also a semi-professional magician.  I have some tricks that I worked on EVERY dAY for a year before I ever used it in a show. That means some days I would work on it for an hour or two and some days 10 - 20 minutes.  It's great when you don't have to think about it.  You know it so well the body automatically takes care of it.  And, even though I was raised in IOWA and you are from oklahoma I think you (disregarding wrestling) are a dam good teacher with very sound ideas.  Keep up the good work.  Very few people know what kind of a commitment it takes to get to the next level of their sport.  I have a simple principle for that kind of success.  I call it my "Ask me, Ted".principle. You need:  Attitude + Skill + Knowledge +  Maturity + Experience.  Combine that and are you willing to put forth the Time + Effort + Dedication you need to be successful.  Do all that and you will probably be very successful."

PRACTICE TIP

How to Play in the Wind
(By Tim Graves, PGA)

We have had a few single axis golfers ask us our advice on how to play golf in the wind. What we recommend for handling different shots and how the wind might affect these shots.

Especially this time of year - it seems the wind seems to pick up (especially if you live in the "flat" states as we do..). You have a choice when playing in the wind - you can either "fight" the wind or not. Let's talk about what we mean in some different situations.

Wind Into Your Face: (When you are hitting shots directly into the wind).

First - remember - when you hit a golf shot, the lift on the shot is produced by hitting down into the ball, the hitting down action produces spin which lifts the ball. When you are hitting into the wind - you DON'T want more spin. This will produce too much lift and a "ballooned" shot which will go up and come down short of your target.

1. For every 1 mph of wind into your face add 1 yard. If 10 mph into your face, add 10 yards... Meaning a 10 mph wind into your face is what is called a 1 club wind.

2. Swing EASY. It is recommended to take 1 more club than you need after taking the wind into affect. For example, if you hit a 7 iron 150 yards, have 10 mph into your face, you would play it as 160 yards (a 6 iron) than add 1 club (a 5 iron). Take 1 more club after factoring the wind so you will swing easy - this easy swing will produce less spin and thus the ball will not balloon up.

3. Ball position - back up in your stance slightly. It is recommend to back the ball up in your stance slightly in order to help you hold the angles of impact and to help keep the loft off the club.. meaning - make sure you hold angles of impact and don't break down or "cast" the club. This casting increases loft of the club at impact and will also cause the ball to balloon.

4. Hold impact angle (firm leading wrist) as long as possible. As stated in #3 - this angle will help keep the ball down and not balloon into the wind.

Downwind (Hitting Shots with the Wind):

1. As with the wind into your face - factor wind the same way (except this will add distance to your shots). For every 1 mph of wind downwind - take 1 yard off your shot. Meaning, if you have 10 mph of wind downwind - take one less club than normal. If you typically hit a 7 iron 150 yards and have 10 mph wind downwind - hit a 8 iron (or very easy 7 iron..).

2. Ball position is the same as normal shots (with no wind).

3. When hitting downwind, the wind will take some of the spin off the shot. Meaning, if you typically hit shots that spin or hold greens, downwind shots will not hold as well (less spin). Play shots accordingly - meaning these shots will bounce further when they hit the green and roll out a little more.

4. Severely Downwind Shots... If you have a lot of wind downwind - say 30 to 40 mph downwind - this wind tends to "knock the shots out of the air". Or in other words, push the ball down to the ground. The reason for this is that amount of wind takes most of the spin off the shot and pushes the ball down. To calculate (a lot by experience) - if 40 mph downwind, you may only take 20 to 30 yards off the shot rather than 40 yards as that much wind will reduce flight of the ball.

Other Points with Downwind Shots -

There is a greater affect the longer the ball is in the air. Meaning - a 6 iron will be affected by the wind a lot more than a wedge. Both will go further than normal - the 6 iron a longer as it is in the air longer...

Crosswind (Hitting shots with wind right to left or left to right):

1. We typically recommend to "ride the wind". Meaning, for example, if the wind is blowing right to left and you are right handed, play the shot right of the hole and let the wind blow back to the target. This riding the wind will typically allow you to play the "normal" yardage shot (for example - if you hit a 7 iron from 150 yards, a crosswind 7 iron will still be 150 yards) unless the wind is very severe. If you choose to play into the wind - meaning if right to left wind and you play shot left to right, the shot will react more like a into the wind shot (as described above).

2. When playing a cross wind shot line up accordingly. For example - if a right to left wind - line up slightly to the right and hit the ball as straight as possible - and let the wind do the "work" for you. Try not to push or pull the shot into the wind... typically causes side spin on the shot which is hard to control in normal situations, not to mention windy conditions.

Other Points to Consider When Playing Wind Shots:

1. Wind DOES affect putts. There is wind close to the ground also. Play the wind accordingly when putting. Into the wind - hit a little harder, etc..

2. You might consider playing a slightly harder ball when playing in windy conditions.. a harder ball will spin less and be affected less by the wind.

3. Play more fairway woods or hybrids when possible (especially when into the wind). These clubs produce less spin which will be affected less by the wind.

4. Always remember to swing EASIER when in windy conditions - for many it is "instinctive" to swing harder - swinging easier produces less spin and thus the shots will be affected by the wind less.

Good Luck!!

PLEASE don't hesitate to call or email us anytime!!

Remember - ALWAYS PRACTICE WITH A PURPOSE

TALK ABOUT CLUBS

Make sure you have the correct lofted driver. Meaning - the loft of the driver needs to match your swing speed. The correct loft will allow for maximum ball fly distance and roll with your swing speed. Incorrect lofted drivers can affect drives by lose of distance and even lose of accuracy.

Examples -

A golfer who hits a driver with 100 mph swing speed needs a 9.5* lofted driver (or higher).
A golfer who hits a driver with 90 mph swing speed needs a 10.5* lofted driver (or higher).

(We can determine swing speed by how far you hit particular irons - for example - a 9 iron equates to 1.47 yards per 1 mph).

WHAT'S UP CORNER?
Scott Renfrow, GGA CR Director

First off, thanks to all our wonderful students who visited the Academy in Orlando this spring.  The students were great, the weather was mostly great, and Eagle Creek once again bested all expectations for service.  Thanks to all.

As we continue to work towards the goal of helping any and every golfer who struggles with their game and is looking for a simpler, less complicated way to play the game, we find our biggest struggle is simply "telling the story" so to speak.  For those who know and have experienced it, Moe's swing is by FAR the least complicated way to swing a golf club and achieve the distance, accuracy, and simplicity that makes the game enjoyable.  To that end, I invite each of you to visit our home page at www.swinglikemoe.com .  Todd and I worked on a video presentation that compares Moe's swing to the conventional mechanics, and it's very easy to see why Moe was so great, and MORE importantly, how we can all become great strikers of the golf ball.  To view the video, simply visit the home page at www.swinglikemoe.com and you'll see the video in the top center part of the screen.  Hit 'Play' and enjoy.  What you see in that video presentation of Moe's mechanics is what each and EVERY video, training aid, etip, and school we offer are all about.

I mentioned in my last article that changes are happening rapidly here at GGA, and those changes continue.  Stay tuned for details.

Until next time, hit em' straight!
