*************** BUILD YOUR GAME CAMP NOTICE - (For anyone who is interested in one of our camps and can travel "last minute"..)
Our next Build Your Game Camp (BYGC) (the last at our Academy in Orlando until the fall), has had now 3 students who have rescheduled due to different reasons... Meaning, there are a few openings in this camp and chances are it will not sell out. Also meaning, anyone attending will get extra one on one time due to the low number in this camp... This DOESN'T happen often. In fact, we don't have another opening in our camps until June after this camp. If you can "sneak away" for a few days the end of this month and are interested in attending one of our camps - give us a call or email - we'll work out details with you.
************** GET ON THE RIGHT PATH
As many of you know, we (the GGA) have developed a path proven to make better golfers. In fact, this path has lead to 1,000s of golfers getting much better. (Just go to our forum and ask for yourself..). We have had many many golfers who have started with us with handicaps in the high 20s and mid 30s who are now single digit golfers - and on their way to scratch golf!! These golfers are on our path... we have developed this path, believe 110% in this path and support everyone as much as possible on this path. You have already started this path by receiving and reading this newsletter.
To see more about our path to better golf please go to: http://www.swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=271581808576695&pr=GGA_Path_To_Great_Golf&=SID
************* FRUSTRATED WITH YOUR GAME.... SOMETIMES THINK ABOUT QUITTING.... Hopefully the experience of two of our alumni will help....
Mark Wampler (Lousville, KY): "I came to the camp hoping that Todd and Tim could fix me. My swing was a mess as was my game. I had been frustrated to the point of quitting golf several times. I have been playing about 3 years and was basically self taught. I reviewed the 7 Principles Series several times but just couldn't consistently hit the ball... much less hit it straight. Todd summed it up pretty well. He said that it was "feast or famine" when it came to my swing.
My wife's situation was a little different. She has never played golf before meeting me. When I was able to get her out on the course, she really had trouble hitting the ball. If she did, it didn't go far at all. She would get really frustrated and end up just putting on each green. That frustration was partially fuels by the fact that she is a good athlete (All-Europe in high school basketball and soccer).
Now that the boring background is out of the way, let's get on to the camp. I have to say that it was an amazing experience...far exceeding our expectations.
I won't go into all of the details of the camp. I will tell you that GGA is one of the most professional services that I have ever dealt with. The entire experience was second to none. Going to the golf camp, there are certain things that you expect: top notch game instruction, excellent facilities, good food, up to date equipment. GGA delivered on each of these items. What I didn't expect was the class room experience. These guys can teach. What we learned in the class was as important to me as what was taught on the course. They held my attention the entire time. I also enjoyed the Moe stories and imitations. Todd and Tim sound just like Moe. Lunch time was pretty cool as well. The team never seemed to tire of our many questions. I felt like I was just having lunch with a few of my friends. Many of you have seen Todd and Tim hit the ball. I don't think I need to tell how impressive that was. Forge being like Mike---"I want to hit like Moe". Maybe we need a new tee shirt design?
Todd and Tim have permanently changed my game. First, I know how to practice now- with a purpose. I even look forward to practice. I actually enjoy working on my short game. My mental game has changed as well. I haven't played any regular rounds since getting home, but I have played in a scramble (yesterday). I no longer get mad when I hit bad shots. I try to forget them and focus on the next good shot. I only lost one ball...and that's a record. I enjoyed playing more yesterday than possibly any other time. I chipped and putted as well as the scratch golfer who played with my team. Thanks Tim.
I had a very frustrating Thursday and Friday during the camp. Todd, Tim and Jared spent a whole lot of time trying to fix a couple of glitches in my swing. For some reason I couldn't get my body to do what they wanted. I really tried. I could see on tape what Todd wanted. I even kind of did it once. It was encouraging to hear the excitement in Todd's voice when he could see improvements. But for some reason, I kept reverting to the old habit. I kept moving my head back during my back swing and then not releasing the club at impact. I either hit "fat" or had an irritating fading ball flight. The good news is that I left the camp knowing what needed fixing and how to work on it. I thought about his for nearly 13 to 14 hours spent in the car driving home. When I got to the hotel on Friday night, I took my clubs inside and used the mirror for feed back and began to slowly swing the club. After a while, I could feel what I needed to do. When I got home on Saturday, I set up a hitting station in my living room (it was cold and raining in Kentucky). I spent several hours swinging in front of the mirror practicing what I had been taught.
Todd and Tim also had an impact on my wife. It was pretty cool hearing her yell with excitement when she hit a 200 yard driver. As soon as we were home, Margie began organizing and filing all of the e-tips. She now has a practice book to reference. She hasn't been able to practice as much because of her work, but is doing so each chance she gets. Her hitting has improved, but wants to wait a long while before playing. Margie wants to build a putting green and hitting station to use in the garage. I think I'm the luckiest man alive! She was talking about attending the camp again before this camp was even over.
I'll stop now. I could keep talking about our experience but Doc has to remain king of the long posts [GGA Forum]. I think my wife summed it up best. We were driving home and I noticed that she was looking a little downcast. I asked if something was wrong. Her reply was "I feel like we've just left family behind". She was right. Todd, Tim, Jared, Brent, Scott (wish we could have met you)... you guys are the best. Keep up the great work. We will see you again."
************** NOTICE - timg@swinglikemoe.com
The end of this month we will be changing our instructional etip format. It will contain the same information, but will come a "little more fancy"... As we are expecting to be on the Golf Channel in the very near future (we will of course let everyone know that dates when we are notified), we wanted to make our etips match our website format a little closer. This means - the etip will come from timg@swinglikemoe.com starting mid April. If you need to save this email address timg@swinglikemoe.com in your email group - please do so. We will remind again in the next etip or two..

***************** PRACTICE TIP
HOW TO HIT FAIRWAY WOODS AND HYBRIDS (LONG IRON REPLACEMENT CLUBS)
We have recently received quite a few requests to cover the fundamentals of hitting fairway woods and the recently popular long iron replacement clubs - the hybrid (aka the utility club, baffler, heavenwood, etc..)
We are also sure you have seen the increased popularity in these clubs (in particular the hybrids) by all players (both amateur and professional).
Reasons for the increased popularity include:
1. The ease of hitting these clubs compared to mid and long irons. The fairway woods and hybrids are built with a low center of gravity, weight in the front and base of the club, and a beveled sole with rounded edges, all making it much easier to get the ball off the ground with medium to minimal club head speed.
2. The ease of hitting these clubs high. As golf courses get longer and longer and greens get harder and harder, golfers are needing longer clubs in their bags that they can hit high and land soft on these hard greens... 2, 3, 4... irons with not do this. These clubs are built to come in relatively low and "hot" (minimal spin). The hybrids are built to create much more height on the golf shot with a soft landing on the green.
I remember a few years ago watching an old "Wonderful World of Golf" Show featuring Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. They were standing on the 17th hole (don't remember the course) - a 200+ yard par 3. Jack pulled out a 3 iron and hit it just over head high - the ball landed on the green, one hopped and stopped about 5 feet from the hole - a GREAT golf shot... but sorry to say Jack - that shot doesn't work anymore. If he were to hit that shot on today's greens (even the average municipal golf course's greens) it would have on hopped over the back and ended up in the river... this is why Jack now also carries an addition fairway wood and hybrids... because, of course, the change in his swing - little slower now, not as easy to hit long irons.., but more importantly, because of the change in the golf course - much harder and faster and the need to hit those higher/softer shots.
As you go through this practice tip - think about the golf you play, the type of shots you need - How many times do you have 170++ yards into those par 3s or 2nd shots into the par 4s, etc.. that you need to hit the green that has a hard time holding even wedge shots?? How many times do you have to hit shots into tight pin positions from over 150 yards?? How many times do you set up over a long/mid iron thinking the percentage is pretty low to hit it solid and at the target?? A lot of these issues can be solved using hybrids and fairway woods and of course knowing how to properly play these clubs.
To see the pictures related to this etip please go to: http://www.swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=431257611111453&pr=ETips&=SID Scroll down to "How to Hit Fairway Woods and Hybrids" - then click on CHANGE ALBUM on the right of the screen.
Pic. 1 The fairway woods and hybrids are built with a low center of gravity, weight in the front and base of the club, and a beveled sole with rounded edges, all making them much easier to get the ball off the ground with medium to minimal club head speed.
Pic. 2 Hitting fairway woods and utility clubs can sometimes be the most challenging clubs in the bag due to the fact that the ball position is the farthest forward in the stance while the ball is on the ground.
Pic. 3 As you can see, the ball position with the fairway woods is inside the lead shoulder but forward of a 5 iron.
Pic. 4 The ball position of the iron replacement clubs such as the Cobra Baffler (pictured), or other hybrids is at or slightly in front of the iron that the club replaces.
Pic. 5 Because the hybrids are slightly longer, you will be slightly further from the ball than the long iron it replaces. For example, the average distance from a 5 iron is 27 inches (from toe line to ball - see Etip on same page entitled "Posture and Stability/Ideal Setup", the average distance from a 5 utility type club (standard length) from toe line to ball is 28 inches.
Pic. 6 Most people have trouble hitting the longer clubs due to an early release. Because the ball is forward, the result is typically topping or hitting behind the ball (fat type shot).
Pic. 7 The ideal impact with a hybrid is to make sure the hands are still leading the club into impact where the hands are slightly in front of the club head at impact. You can see how the trail arm is still slightly bent, the lead arm and club are in a straight line. The club is still striking the ball at a slight downward angle (as you do with an iron). It is NOT a 'scooping", upward angle as many think.
Pic. 8 Believe it or not, a fairway wood is struck the same way, however, since the ball is slightly forward of a hybrid position, the strike is a little more swept. A good description is "take a small divot with a utility type club, bruise the grass with the fairway wood."
Pic. 9 One way to learn the feeling of the strike is to place the leverage bag in a forward position (back of the bag where the ball position would be, as pictured).
Pic. 10 When you strike the leverage bag, make sure your head is still and your hands lead the club into the leverage bag until impact where you get the feeling of the hands passing the bag before and into impact.
Pic. 11 The goal is to unhinge the club where the hands are always leading the club head.
Pic. 12 Another way to understand this is using the PVC where you can feel the hands unhinging into impact.
Pic. 13 For more information about the GGA Leverage Bag and PVC drills, please review the GGA Etips at "Leverage Bag/Winter Practice Tips #1" - www.swinglikemoe.com
Good Luck!

******************* WHAT'S UP CORNER (Scott Renfrow, GGA Customer Relations Director)
Winds of Change
Welcome to Golf Season 2006. With the Masters, so opens a new season of golf. May it be your best golf season yet.
With the open of a new golf season, things are hopping here at the Graves Golf Academy. There are so many things we are working on to better serve you, our customers, that I thought it appropriate to share with you what's going on. So here goes.
For starters, and most importantly, we are changing the way you receive this etip. We have been working diligently to make the etip better, easier to read, and easier to connect to the information vital to you; the instruction. We are also planning to periodically let you about promotions and specials, as well as our full line of products to help you master your game. With this change in the etip distribution, we hope to get the information to you on a regularly scheduled, consistent basis.
Our only request of you as we make this change it to simply add the following email address to you address book (to avoid the 'junk' mail folder): timg@swinglikemoe.com . That's all you need to do.
As we make this transition to the new distribution method, we will send out a "Test" newsletter. Tim will also notify by the normal distribution means to look for the Test. We are excited about using this technology at our disposal to bring you the best instruction on the Single Axis swing in the golf market.
Let's talk about schools for a moment. We have done something this year for the first time ever; published our entire year's schedule of schools. With this change, we are seeing schools fill up VERY quickly. For example, our schools in October in San Diego, which are still over 6 months away, are ½ full. I say that simply to say this; don't wait to register for a school. So far this year, the schools are running at about 95% capacity, meaning they are full. If you are thinking about coming to a school, register now.
Our website, which as you know is constantly being updated, will continue to change. We are seeing about 200 new visitors per week to the website, which is wonderful, and we are excited about sharing Moe's genius with the golf world. As you are browsing through the site, if there is something that needs to be changed, clarified, added, please don't hesitate to email me. Our only feedback is from you, those who have been in the "system" for a while. With the influx of new people, we need your help in sharing the message of the secret we all know and are more than willing to share, the secret of a simpler way to play the game.
In addition to an ever changing website, we are excited to announce that the Graves Golf Academy will be appearing on the Golf Channel's Academy Live sometime this spring. The Academy live program is the hour long, Monday night program that is part of Golf Channel's "Your Game Night". Watch for details to come soon.
More changes we are working on are: A "Video of the Month" club, where members will receive from the Academy a monthly instructional video. We are working on the program now, watch for more details in the near future. A "Members Only" website, which when completed, will include the Video of the Month, a package of annual mail in videos, and much more. Again, details to come. A new school offering; the 'Alumni Playing School'. This school offering would be for our alumni to come and get on the course with Todd, Tim and the Graves staff as caddies and coaches around the course, with individual instruction in the afternoons.
As you can see, the winds of change are blowing. We look forward to you input, participation and most importantly, your game improvement as a result of these changes. Until next time, "Hit em' straight"!
Scott Renfrow scottr@swinglikemoe.com
***************** TALK ABOUT CLUBS
* Fact - Have had a lot of confusion lately about ordering clubs. When ordering any set of irons you DO NOT have to order a certain set make up, meaning, if you want to only order the 5 through wedge or 6 through wedge, etc.. that is fine. Our programs we have set up with all major manufacturers allow us to do this. With all companies we have a set price per set and a set price per club (if less than 8 in the order).
When looking at if your clubs fit or if you are thinking about getting new clubs - the following MUST be fit on each club to fit the club to your single axis specs:
1. Grip Size to match hand size 2. Shaft length to match height vs. wrist to floor measurement 3. Shaft flex to match swing speed (can be determined by how far hit certain irons) 4. Lie angle to match height vs. wrist to floor measurement 5. Set make up to match swing speed and your playability 6. Driver loft to match your swing speed
You can now find out what a properly fit club is for you: Go to our website at: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=518148787583441&pr=Club_Fitting&=SID This is a free way to determine what is a properly fit club for you.
If you have any questions about your current equipment or future equipment, don't hesitate to email us anytime.
********************* GGA RECOGNITION CORNER
Kelly Wright (Norman, OK) "I got my "first" Hole in One yesterday 3-31-06. Cedar Valley in Guthrie, International Course, # 17 183 yds to the pin (laser). I hit a Callaway Heavenwood 3H, Titleist so/lo ball. Of course, wearing my Graves Golf Hat! I also shot my personal low of 82."
Bill Fogg "I'd like to share a little success story with you. I started playing Natural Golf in 1996. I won my club championship in 1997 with handicap. I was an 18 handicap at the time. I made steady improvement in my game and I won the club championship in 2001 low gross. Last year I received an e-mail from GGA and later ordered the Total Game Overview. I gave up Natural Golf and started trying to "Swing like Moe". I kept playing with the ten finger grip, however, I was doing it the way you show it in the "Advanced Unified Hands" in GGA's e-tips. In late January this year, I decided to switch to the overlapping grip as shown in the same e-tip. The first round I played using the overlapping grip I shot even par. The next two rounds I shot 1 under. And then on February 6th I had my career round so far. I shot six under par and that was with two bogies. I would like to thank you and Todd for teaching the single axis swing the way it is meant to be. My handicap is now the lowest it's ever been. It's 0.9 USGA index. Keep up the good work. I can't wait until I'll be able to attend one of your schools."
******************** GGA "TIDBITS" * Scott has been updating our website daily - check it out - etip section updated, etc..
* We have hired a new instructor here in OKC who will be traveling with us. His name is Brent Evans from Chandler, OK. He has practiced and worked with us at our facility for a couple of years now and has shown an interest in teaching with us. Now that he is finishing college, we thought it would be a great time to put him in our apprentice instructor program. Brent's a really good "kid" (man I'm getting old to call Brent a kid.....) and a great golfer... we have a lot of fun "taking it to the course" for a quite afternoon match... Hope everyone gets to meet him soon, and we'll soon have his information on our website.
* Golf Channel - Plans are still in the work for us to be on the Golf Channel in the very near future. When we are notified of the dates - we will let everyone know.
******************* UPCOMING GGA EVENTS:
