*************** 100th INSTRUCTIONAL ETIP
Hard to believe we have written 100 etips in the past 4+ years. (For those new to our etips - each month we have a new etip (for example #1) and then a mid month etip (#1A) - this being #50A is our 100th). We started with a group of about 500 receiving our material, and now have grown to almost 30x that. We are honored to have so many reading our material and continually hope our instruction helps everyone with the single axis swing and their entire golf game.
If you would like to see many of our past etips (achieve), please visit our forum at: http://fuzz2moe.forumco.com/forum~FORUM_ID~16.asp
*************** THANK YOU
Want to send a thank you to all those who attended our 3 day school the first weekend of this month and our Build Your Game Camp last week. We saw a great group (20 different students) - students came from all over.... Minnesota, New York, Florida, Texas to name a few states, and even one student came from as far as Sweden. Again - thanks everyone - and remember, don't hesitate to call or email us anytime.
************** MOE NORMAN MEMORIAL
This upcoming weekend will be our 2nd Annual Moe Norman Memorial Event/Tournament. We are looking forward to seeing everyone attending the event. If anyone wants to sign up last minute, we still have a few spots open, anyone attending who needs last minute information, please call or email us anytime. In two weeks we'll let everyone know who has this year's "bragging rights" for the scramble, individual events, and hopefully will be able to announce a winner of the $5,000 putting contest. Good Luck Everyone!!!
**************** FIRST GIVEAWAY - 100th Etip Celebration!! GGA 3 DAY SCHOOL WINNER:
As hopefully everyone knows, anyone who has signed up for this instructional newsletter and/or our "snail mail" newsletter is eligible for the free GGA 3 day school giveaway. Thought we'd give another away (a little early) for our 100th Etip Celebration!!

The next winner is: Greg Riffle from Mound, MN.
Congratulations Doug and Greg! - Let us know what school you want to attend.
****************** HOPEFULLY WINTER IS ALMOST OVER????
Hopefully we have had our last cold freeze this weekend here in OKC. To be honest, we haven't had much of a winter here, but this weekend has us dug in pretty deep in the cold.
If you have started to think about the upcoming golf year, and are considering some instruction - maybe a school/camp, etc.. you might want to consider our mid March or April schools at our academy in Orlando, or spring schools at our academy in Oklahoma City or maybe a school in our East Coast swing the end of May.
We have a few spots open in all those schools/camps, but if the trend stays the same as it has been for the past year, they will sell out about 2 to 3 weeks before the event.
We guarantee a great learning experience at all our events and a lot of fun too!!
For more information and scheduling of schools/camps, please see below in our Schedule Section or visit our website at: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=756189809287923&pr=School_Schedule&=SID
In our past school (first of the year at our Orlando Academy at Eagle Creek Golf Course) - we had a student from Sweden. He sent us an email we wanted to share with everyone:
L. Rylander (Sweden): "Dear all. Im not e new member, participate NG and after change went over to Graves for 4-5 years ago. I participate last week in Orlando 3 days session. It was one of my best moment in golf. Included scoring 80 AND hole in one after hit the flag 2 days in row. I have had instructions several times from NG instructors (In sweden all Pro get instructions in NG,) not in Moe Normans swing. I have instruction tape from 5 years ago and also the 7 principals. I do not understand all before this 3 days visit in Orlando. I get a lot of change and get a lot of tip and have now 2 months time before we start play in Sweden - to practicing this. All the guys are good, very good to transform the swing to you. Also nice to meet other golfer. Thanks all the staff, I have 2-3 ft snow in Sweden!!! I try to shovel this with open hand to strengthen my right arm. See you next year." Lille-Bror

***************** PRACTICE TIP
Review of WINTER PRACTICE TIP #3 - The Vertical Drop Please see the pictures on our website at: http://www.swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=246820754146937&pr=ETips&=SID We have had a lot of great discussion about this topic. Please feel free to email or call us anytime for more information.
CAUSE / EFFECT RELATIONSHIP
This past week, we started our 2006 teaching season in Florida. We hadn't taught (at a school) for nearly 2 months and as always, as we start to teach our groups again, a lot of common topics are brought up by the students.
As I taught this past week, I found myself referring to what we at the GGA call the "Cause / Effect Relationship" quite often. I know we have discussed before in past etips, but I wanted to bring up again as I think it is something we all need to review and think about in our own swings.
So often, as we teach, we see golfers who are working on issues in their swing that they have very little control over. They work on positions or try to change positions in their swing that are results of earlier issues in their swing. (Confused yet - here a some examples..)
We call this the Cause / Effect Relationship
Example #1: How many times do we hear - "If only I could keep my back foot down at impact, I'd hit the ball good."
Question - Do you think keeping the back foot down is a Cause or Effect?
It is actually an Effect - Meaning, it is caused by something else in your swing, you have to fix something else in your swing to keep the back foot down. Typically - a golfer who can't keep his back foot down has an outside to in plane (slice plane downswing). This outside to in plane causes the lead shoulder to pull out which causes the trail hip to pull which causes the trail foot to come up before impact. So, if you are trying to keep your trail foot down at impact, you need to determine the Cause and fix it, as keeping the trail foot down is an Effect.
Example #2: Next comment we hear often - "I need to keep my head down."
Question - Cause or Effect?
Lifting your head in the golf swing is typically an Effect. Yes, this is one of the most common things you hear from even teachers, but lifting your head in your swing is typically an effect of other issues. For example - If you are too close to the ball, what does your body have to do to respond to the shot? If you are too close, you will pull out of the shot (spin out with your hips, shoulders, etc..) to allow for the lead arm to straighten at impact (which it will do with the force of the golf swing). This pulling out will cause your head to lift (come up) in your golf swing. So, if you are trying to keep your head down in your swing - it will be very difficult, if not impossible, unless you fix the Cause first.
Example #3:
Next comment we hear - "I can't keep my lead knee flexed through the swing."
Again - Cause or Effect?
Sure you're starting to get the theme by now... and yes, the lead knee flex is an Effect. The Cause can be many issues, but typically it is the same as the one that causes the trail foot to come up prior to impact - an outside to in swing path - the force of this swing path will cause the lead knee to prematurely straighten to keep balance in your swing. In other words, you must first fix the path which will in turn fix the Effect.
What to do next???
I would recommend everyone to break down their swing the best they can. Compare your swing to an ideal (we recommend using the many swings and instruction in our Total Game Overview Series or for more advanced instruction our 7 Principles) and determine where your "swing faults" are. There will be some major and some minor.
Then determine if these faults are a Cause or Effect. If you are having a hard time determining - you can always call or email us - we are more than happy to help. You will quickly see you will have only a few Causes and many Effects.
Fix the few Causes and ALL the Effects will typically go away... This is how you get a better (much better) swing. You will see RAPID improvement. Working on Effects typically shows minimal to no improvement as the underlying swing fault causing these Effects is still there.
As a coach I would say "Quit beating your head against the wall (as most golfers do) trying to fix Effects - determine the Cause - fix it - you'll be amazed at your improvement."
Lastly - #1 Cause of Swing Issues - Improper Grip #2 Cause of Swing Issues - Improper Set Up #3 Cause of Swing Issues - Improper Takeaway (back swing)
We'll talk more in upcoming issues....
Good Luck
Remember - ALWAYS PRACTICE WITH A PURPOSE
********************** "MOEISMS"
"I never got mad at myself. Why? Because getting mad only makes your swing worse."
Please feel free to comment on this or email any of your favorite "Moeism's" to us if you'd like to share with others....
****************** TRIVIA TIME GIVE AWAY
100th Etip Issue Trivia Time -
Here's the deal - We are going to give away the following:
1. 5 people will win their choice of our instructional material (any one of our instructional DVDs) -or- if you already have all, one of our products of equal value.
2. 1 person will win a Build Your Game Camp at our Academy in Oklahoma City (a $2,000 value).
Now - everyone wants to know, what do I have to do???
You have to answer the following trivia questions.
For each question you answer correctly, you will receive one chance in the drawing. In other words, one correct answer, one chance in drawing, two correct answers, 2 chances (double your odds), or maybe answer all 3 correct - best odds.
Question #1 (easy question): In 1996, the Chairman and CEO (same person) of this company awarded Moe Norman $5,000 per month for the rest of his life. Moe asked "What do I have to do for this money". The Chairman replied, "Nothing, you have already done it."
Which golf company awarded Moe this money?
Question #2 (little tougher): Who was the Chairman and CEO (same person) of the company in Question #1? Hint - He was also a pall bearer at Moe's funeral.
Question #3 (I'll be impressed if you get this one..) Moe Norman told Dave Spencer, head professional at Augusta National, that he had a million dollars in the trunk of his car.
What was Moe talking about? Hint: Moe said "I sit on it everyday, I wouldn't trade it for a million dollars".
Please submit your answers to timkgraves@aol.com
Again - for every question you answer correct - you will get a chance to win GGA instructional material or the grand prize - a GGA Build Your Game Camp.
Winners will be announced in the next etip (March 1st).

*************** GGA RECOGNITION CORNER
We are continuing this section in which we are going to recognize achievements of golfers who are either alumni of the GGA or have just used the GGA newsletters or etips for instruction. We would like to recognize anyone for significant achievement in their golf game in the past few months/year/etc..
Bill Salmon (Chardon, OH): "After spending all year adapting to the single axis swing I want to provide realistic comments about your program. Unless you are a scratch player I'm convinced that it takes the better part of a year to begin to understand and feel the swing. You must spend numerous hours studying the DVD's, not just watching them. Each time you view the specific DVD's you need to look at various parts of the anatomy plus ball position numerous times to really understand it. You and Todd say the word's but it takes a long time and many viewings to see , hear and incorporate the pieces into one's new swing. You and Todd are brutally honest in your approach to teaching the swing, however I feel you should not quote Ben Hogan's comment how it took him 21 days to change something in his swing. It takes us mere mortals a hell of a lot longer to mimic Moe's swing. I started the year as a 9 handicap and went to 10 with the changes and only now at the end of the season in NE Ohio am I really putting it together and I'm confident that [this year] I will get to single digits. That's if I continue to practice all winter. It will always be a work in process and I feel I will just have to continue to set goals and work toward those goals and never accept the idea I can't improve some part of my game. I had a master PGA teaching pro watch me on the driving range and didn't find fault with the single axis approach. He then shared with me that he saw Moe give a ball striking demo in Fl. some years ago and was totally impressed. He also said it's hard to persuade young kid's to adapt the swing because it's not the norm they see on the TV and the Tour. Therefore, if your were to find some grade school or high school kid's with potential you might be able to work with them and start a revaluation with future players. Maybe, with high school players who have a coach that understands and endorses the concept. Thanks guy's, I will always be great full that now at 66 years of age I finally found the answer to a better golf swing." Regard's, Bill.
Steve Clay (Akron, OH): "This is just another thanks for showing me a easier path. I remember 3 years ago I couldn't break 80 at my home course, now look , 3 years later iIm pushing to break into the 60's .That's so cool , and know in my heart I CAN do it. The journey has been so much fun and the education I've gotten , well , I can only say I'm glad I put my ego in check and kept my mind open for a better way. I feel my swing is getting really close now. For the first time I'm just confident when I address the ball even when I have not played for a week. It's the short game now , that's what is stopping me from the even par rounds to the 60's. See you guys in a month. Just a little FYI. , I HAVE KEPT TRUE TO MY WORD THAT I WOULD COME SEE YOU GUYS EVERY 6 MONTHS. Now that I find to be cool also . Man has time flown bye or what? I am very serious about getting to the level I know I can play. That is a personal accomplishment I chose to undertake, but I must have FUN along the way or I hang up the clubs. So, Thanks again and talk to you soon." Steve
Congrats and Thanks Everyone!!!
********************* GGA "TIDBITS" Moe Norman Movie
Todd spoke with Barry Morrow (producer) a few days ago. The Movie is making progress as the script has been given to a very well known actor (when he signs the contract we will announce his name) and he is reviewing the part. We are waiting to hear from him as whether he accepts. Barry has officially asked Todd to consult with the actors as well as stand in for golf swings if needed.
*********** Todd's Book
For the past year, Todd has been working on his book about Moe, his relationships and his intuitive teachings. Todd says he has much left to do on the book however, here is a preview.
“It's all that gosh dang hope and fear. Hope and fear. And it just drives me nuts,” Moe said on the Golf Digest video interview that set sales records, according to Bob Carney, the magazine's creative director. “ Losers live that way, every day in life,” Moe continued, “they are stumbling over their own emotions. Their minds are in the way. They don't know how to get out of their own way because they don't understand their own self. ”Moe was a demonstrator of swing mastery and an intuitive instructor of mental and emotional management, though the latter drew little attention from a golf culture otherwise obsessed with swing mechanics.“ You are what you think you are. If you think you're beat, you are. If you want to win but think you can't, it is almost certain that you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost,” Moe would say. Here are other Moe Norman wisdom nuggets on this subject that I would hear him repeat: “Success is all in the state of mind. ”The man who wins is the man who thinks he can. We've all got them in our clubs. They've got no business playing as good as they do. They've got no business winning as much as they do. But they do, because they think they can. "Stop being afraid of yourself. “ The only way you're going to play golf up to your true potential is by playing subconscious golf. ”As Moe said, it's all that gosh dang hope and fear.
