I recently purchased a Mizuno MP001 4 wood, R flex in a steel shaft. I only purchased the steel shaft because that was all that was available in R flex. I feel that I am hitting it fairly well, but am wondering if I should reshaft w/ graphite(because of vibration and possible tendonitis). When I stated this to a pro recently, he told me that you should not reshaft a club that was originally steel shafted w/ graphite and vice versa because of the weight of the head. Is this accurate? Is there any real disadvantage w/ playing a steel shafted fairway wood?

A club shafted with a steel shaft will have a slightly heavier head than one with a graphite shaft. This is done to maintain what is called the swingweight. If you want a graphite shafted club with the heavier head you can compensate by making the graphite shaft a little shorter( perhaps as little as 1/2"). This will keep the swingweight the same. It is also possible that the extra weight in the head was achieved by adding lead weights inside the steel shaft where it fits in the hosel of the club head.

My best advice is to go to a reputable club maker, tell what your want and why. He can best advise you on your options.

Hoping for success without hard work is like trying to harvest without planting.
