Thanks for all the compliments on my putting it means alot because before going side saddle i was the undisputed worlds worst putter. I do practice a lot for two reasons : 1.Its fun to putt side saddle 2.It doesnt hurt your back so you can practice a lot.To me the big advantages are facing the line so your putt is always in front of you and putting with one hand simplifies the stroke and using binocular vision enhances distance controll. As Tim says great putters putt for distance poor putters putt for accuracy.I researched side saddle putters extensively and found the Jennings putter far and away the best. His site is ergonomicgolf.com if anyone wants to check it out. However as I told my playing partner today , I really dont reccomend anyone else using it(heh heh). Sorry for the delay Steve, Haven't been on in a couple days.Last time I was on I was pretty rude to a fellow Moe swinger and I figured I better not drink and write. Just got home from a Xmas party and I was the Designated driver so I guess its o.k. It seem s like the guys have pretty much nailed anything I could tell you about it. I only know of the puttmagic site, I use to know another but it was only for the putter used not like Puttmagic where you can get a variety. I have used 3 different sidesaddle putters from the site and the guy is pretty good. I don't know what it would take to bend your putter shaft the correct way. I do know that you do need at least 10* of bend in the shaft to make it legal.I had the 3 ball putter on his site but have since switched to the waffle iron knock off on his site.As a matter of fact though the three ball is the one I use when I travel because its the only one I have that will fit in my travel bag. Keep this in mind if you change shafts or are chooing a shaft length. Most travel bags will only accomadate a 47 inch club. My Putters are 50" but I wacked off about 5" on one and insert a replacement 5" that will slide into the shaft of the other one. But with all the competition it looks like we'll have down there this year I may have to take the one I'm using and ship it to the club so I can use it. I don't want to be without my competition putter for the big show. Your gonna love this style, once you get use to it you will never go back. Give yourself a break though, let yourself get use to it before nixing it, especially if you are as bad a putter as Todd says you are. (ha ha) Scotts right about the componets but I've always had the guy build mine. Just lazy I guess. Plus I want to know that it is set up legal for competition and done correctly. Not that I couldn't but I figure let the proffessional do his job. As far as the length of the shaft it is all trial and error. If your not sure what it is you want I would suggest getting a 52" shaft and telling the guy not to put the shaft on it, that way you can experiement with it a bit before putting the grip on permantently. When I last talked to Tim he said he also thought it was the most accurate way to putt. Although he still kicked my assss in the game of 21 we played, guess thats why I pay him for lessons and he doesn[t pay me. I think I answered your question, I'm not sure what it was anymore. Let me know if I can help more, Dan

Doc- is the shaft just straight up and down or is there a bend in it? From what I gather (and maybe I am having a senior momment) your arm hangs straight down, but your palm is flat against your body and I can,t see that without a bend in the shaft. Tks Dennis

well, I just won an auction for a putter http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7118546236&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT and I'm going to build a sidesaddle putter and give it a good old college try.

Hoping for success without hard work is like trying to harvest without planting.

  • Dennis, the shaft definately has a bend to it. In fact it needs at least a 10 degree bend in it to make it legal.
  • Jesse H. The length of the shaft is just a guestimate. There is no formula because it is a preference issue. I suggest you get as long a shaft as you can and experiment with the style to find "your" favorite way to side saddle. I know a few people who use this method and none of us stand the same way while putting, but we are all side saddle. ( sort of like a golf swing huh?)
Man it looks like I'm really going to practice my golf swing now , seeing how everyone will be putting sidesaddle I'm losing my advantage. You know , its funny how many of you are interested in the method. Most people (cg'rs) look at me and say they would never have the balls to "look stupid" on the course to try it. Shows the type of people we have on this site, not afraid to look different in order to advance their games. Good luck everyone. I can't wait to see all you sidesaddlers at the Moe Memorial.I'll be able to pick up some suggestions to try by watching all the variations you guys come up with to try. The way you grip the shaft will be interesting to see. I have about 3 different ways myself, depending on how things are going. The funny thing is even when I'm off a little with this method its still better than when I was "on" putting conventionally. Some of the members of my club even thing that this is the way Natural Golf was teaching to putt because they knew of my affiliation with the swing. Dan

Chuck and Dan,
Can you describe how you evaluated these putters and what factors led to buying what you did. What makes one better than others?
Thanks.

Yes, please do, I am looking to buy one but have no experience with long or Belly putters, I was looking at the 2 ball Odyssey, is that one any good?

Also I think I want my left arm to be perfectly parallel as it rest on top of the putter in the side saddle position, should it be parallel or should it be angled upwards? A 38 inch putter would make my left arm parallel to the ground with a pine tilt and a 42 inch putter would have my left arm angled upwards with a spine tilt, just wondering if this affects the dynamics of the stroke. thanks!

Wells and jesse H : For me there were several factors. The Jennings head is solid stainless steel high quality and to me just the right weight to roll solid putts. The shaft is aluminum and shipped uncut.Therefor you cut it custom to fit you.Mr. Jennings sends instructions on how to measure it properly. Also I called the man at the puttmagic site (forgot his name) to inquire about another putter the finalizer and he encouraged me to try the Jennings instead. He said it was the best and I now agree.I had played a round of golf with the owner of the Finalizer and tried it that day.The difference was orders of magnitude ,with the Jennings out classing the Finalizer. There are several other putters featured on the puttmagic site and if you look closely I believe you can see the superior quality of the Jennings putter. Finally , Mr. Jennings is genuinely passionate about his putter and a joy to talk to about it. I bought two spare putters that I keep in my closet just in case Mr. Jennings shuts down ,he is getting older and like sa golf people are skeptical as we all know.Of course to each his own ,but I am sold on the Jennings. I have been using it for several years and I can say with total confidence I will never putt any other way or use any other putter. And at about $100 you cant beat the price.

Doc, a favorite putter manufacaturer of Murph is Reeso putter https://secure.reeso.com/order.html?PHPSESSID=8eeae646d7a22f7a9e45a5f2f5dc1d06 but the side saddle maximum length is 45". I believe this is 5" shorter than yours. Is that OK?

I have been putting belly style but am looking to "convert" to long style. Any thoughts?

OK, next question. What is the difference between a long putter and a side saddle one? Can't you use a long putter to "side-saddle"?

The TM-45 on the http://puttmagic.com/index.htm site looks pretty interesting also.
