GRAVES GOLF ACADEMY TODD GRAVES "Little Moe" SIGNATURE SCHOOL MAY E-TIP NEWSLETTER - ISSUE #29
Hello Again,
Hope everyone is getting some time to put in their golf game and hopefully those games are showing signs of improvement...
Volume #2 of the 7 Principles of Golf Improvement are out. Everyone who has ordered Volume #2 should have received it by now. If you have not, please call or email us and we'll get it to you immediately. Here are a couple of comments about Volume #2:
Joe C (California): Again, a superb production with the clearest instruction any golfer could hope for; and absolutely has helped me to another new level in building my swing for life (even though I started way late). Thank you for your assistance and your professional dedication to service at the highest level.
George K (Florida): Todd, Tim and all those involved in making these teaching the "Swing Like Moe" videos have done it again! Very, very informative, super professional presentation. Just can say enough positive comments. I received mine today and have watched it twice. Thank you from all of who are trying to become better players.
* Past couple of weeks we've been as busy as ever here at our facility. We've had a Build Your Game Camp (would like to thank Ralph, Bob, George and Greg for attending) and had another "get organized" meeting here in OKC. You'll be seeing changes in the next few months (hopefully for the good.... (fingers crossed)), and hopefully some of the additions will allow Todd and myself to focus a majority of our attention on our teaching material.
* The first addition is we are hiring a "school director" that will be based here in Oklahoma City. His name is Brent Reid and he has lived in Los Angeles for the past 5 years. He will be joining us May 25th, when we are flying him to New Jersey to join us in our East Coast Swing (no rest for the "newbies"). - Thought we'd break him in with a "bang".
* 2nd change/addition is we have updated our schedule for the remainder of the year. This schedule is a "base schedule" that can be amended if we see enough interest in a given area. Please see the schedule below and please feel free to call or email anytime if you have questions or would like to suggest and area for us to bring our schools.
* Next weekend we will be leaving for New Jersey and then Connecticut. We'll be in New Jersey May 24-27th and Connecticut May 29th - 31st. We added May 24th to the New Jersey schedule as an added advanced school day and only have a few signed up on that day right now. Would be great day for anyone interested in advanced swing work along with videoing of their swing and more.
* Keep watching our changing schedule. We are planning upcoming Build Your Game Camps and 1 and 3 day schools in Oklahoma, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, New Jersey, Connecticut, Las Vegas, Kansas and a few other states. Please see our schedule below and visit our website at www.swinglikemoe.com for most updated schedules.
* Our Moe Norman Swing Forum (Chatroom) at http://www.forumco.com/fuzz2moe/default.asp is getting bigger and bigger every day. We currently have 48 pages of members, which is growing everyday. Remember, it costs nothing as it has been set up for all single axis golfers as a site to visit, chat, get answers to swing questions and a place to just "have fun".
SCOTT'S E-CORNER
Hello friends, I hope this finds your golf season in full swing. AND enjoyable! As many of you, I have recently received Volume 2 of the 7 Principles of Golf Improvement series, and I am FLOORED! It's ALL there. Everything we need to know to properly perform a 'Sound, repeatable, powerful swing of ease' is there. I'm anxious to see what Tim has in store for Volumes 3 & 4. Todd set the bar high, but I have full confidence that Tim will 'blow us away' as well! f you are like me, you are watching the first 2 volumes of this set and thinking, "WOW, what an amazing job of instruction". No doubt this series will be 'top shelf' instruction, but the question then remains, 'What are we, as golfers, going to do about it?' Are we going to watch them a few times, try to apply some of the instruction, see that our ball flight isn't the same, and put our DVD's on the shelf to collect dust, or worse yet, sell them? OR..... Are we going to watch the 'model', TRUST that the model is correct, BELIEVE that we too can swing like that, let our IMAGINATIONS run wild with the possibilities, and then IGNORE ball flight as we work to ingrain the proper mechanics? I'll chose the latter. Join me, won't you? Enjoy the series if you already have it. If you don't, well, to be blunt, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Call me or email me any time to chat!

PRACTICE TIP:
Hitting the Driver….Long and Straight
We get numerous questions about maximizing the distance one can hit a driver (given his/her swing specifics). This tips list some of the criteria for maximizing one's driving distance and also relates the difference in short irons vs. the driver. Please visit our website in the next few days for pictures and comments concerning each of these points.
(All pictures will be on website www.swinglikemoe.com under the e-tip section in next few days).
Picture #1 A swing flaw with a 9 iron will cause the ball to spin 5 yards off of the target line, while the same swing flaw with the driver will cause the ball to fly up to 25 yards off of the target line. Therefore, it is much more obvious that you have swing flaws when you are swinging your long irons and woods vs. your short irons. (You may be saying "no kidding", nevertheless, I think all of you would be astonished at how many times people inquire by saying, "I am hitting my low irons good, but my long irons/woods/driver I can't hit at all, I must be swinging my clubs different".) The fact is that the same swing flaws are in each of the swings, and because of issues related to the spin of the ball, the swing faults are not as obvious with the short irons.
Picture #2 Driving the ball long and straight requires ideal club mechanics to maximize the launch, speed and backspin of the ball. It is more important to have good swing mechanics than a "perfect" fitting driver, however, we believe you should have both. We notice that many students want to "buy" a driver to improve their swing, unfortunately, it doesn't work this way. You must first improve the swing mechanics. You should then consider getting a driver to maximize your swing mechanics potential.
Picture #3, 4 Ideal Launch of the golf ball is a result of the loft and shaft of the driver, the correct ball position, and the tee height. All are important variables that can equally affect the launch of the golf ball.
Picture 5 (Graphic with chart) Driver Selection To select the proper driver, you must first calculate your swing speed. Once you do this, you can select the proper loft and shaft. Here is a basic chart for you to refer to if you need help choosing a driver.
Swing Speed Loft (degrees) Shaft Flex 80 or less 13 - 15 Soft / Senior / Ladies 85 - 90 11 - 12 Soft / Regular 90 - 95 10.5 - 11 Regular 95 - 100 10 - 10.5 Regular / Stiff 100-105 9.0 - 10.0 Stiff / Firm 105 - 110 8.0 - 9.0 Firm 110 + < 8.0 X Firm
Picture 6 Ball Position / Tee Height The ball should be positioned at or just in front of the edge lead shoulder and the ball is on a tee at least a height half way above the driver .
Picture 7 Address Position The address position is describe as a tilted triangle with the head positioned at least one foot behind the ball. The spine is tilted and will remain in this tilted position throughout the swing and impact. Be very careful to eliminate excessive movement in the backswing that will change this tilted position at set up as you will have to regain this position during the downswing for good ball contact. In other words, if you move too much in the backswing, you will change the tilt angle and will have to regain this angle for proper, solid and consistent impact.
Picture 8 Leverage Angle Proper arm motion and hand hinge allows for maximum leverage at the top of the swing. You should see the tilt has remained in the spine and your shoulders have turned at the top of the swing.
Picture 9 Impact You will see at impact, that the head has maintained it's position behind the ball, the spine is still tilted and the because the ball is positioned correctly it is struck at the point the club is moving upward (with the driver). Also, the trail foot is still on the ground but the weight has shifted to the lead foot where the lead knee is slightly flexed.
Picture 10 If all of the impact positions are correct, the Driver will align with the lead arm and strike the ball with the ideal launch and loft to produce drives that are solid, long and straight.
Please see our website at www.swinglikemoe.com in the next few days for these pictures. All these are on Volume #2 of the 7 Principles Series where you can see them "live in action" and described by Todd.

GGA RECOGNITION CORNER
We are continuing this section in which we are going to recognize achievements of golfers who are either alumni of the GGA or have just used the GGA newsletters or etips for instruction. We would like to recognize anyone for significant achievement in their golf game in the past few months/year/etc..
Pru M (Cheasepeake, VA): Just for you info. Using Todd's techniques, for the first time in my life I eagled a par 4 hole using a #3 metal wood and it was witnessed by my buddy and a golf course worker! What a thrill!!
Ron K (Richmond, VA): Before learning NG my score was in the mid 90s to high 90s. This spring I have already had a 79, the first time to break 80, and consistently shooting in the low 80's. My drives are consistently straight or has a little draw to it. My playing buddies can't understand why I hit the fairways so consistently. Last Friday I hit 17 out of 18 fairways. It makes the game a lot easier. Thanks for your newsletter and your tips.
Don C (Lesington Park, MD): Shot a 1 over today (73). You were right about the lead arm. Driver is coming around, I even hit my fairway woods good today.
John W (High Point, NC): Had a great day today. 9 pars!! Lots of up and downs, good putting and many drives in the fairways. Still shot 87...... hit some long drives. I'm going to keep plugging away. I know all the work you guys have done is helping. Golf is really fun when you are playing like that.
Gene R (Tulsa, OK): Played yesterday and shot 42 - 37 = 79 on a course he had never played before. Not bad for someone who was happy to break 90 a year ago.
For more great stories, visit our new "Glory Stories" section of our chatroom, and don't hesitate to tell your own "Glory Story".
Keep them coming!!! We would like everyone who has made significant advances in their game, won tournaments, shot personal scores, reached personal goals, etc.. to email or call us with these highlights. We would like to tell everyone about them.. "toot your horn", "brag", "tell everyone", here's your opportunity.
TGGS "TIDBITS"
