Nice sunny/semi-warm day here in chi-town so I decided to hit the range. Brought my video camera...was working on basics, set-up, short backswing.

My club planes very nicely on my backswing with all clubs, but it planes "early". I compared to some Todd DTL videos and here is what I see. My club hits the plane lane when my hands are about mid-torso on the backswing. Todd's club hits the plane line when his hands around his shoulders. Is there significance to this?
Even though I plane the club on the way up, I still tend to stay over the plane due to other swing flaws.....so I'm hoping this find will reveal something in my backswing that will help with the rest of my swing.

The club needs to be planed but underneath the plane line in the mid backswing. Since it is on the line in the backswing, this is actually "over" / above the plane showing an "outside" backswing.

Make sure the club moves under the plane line in the initial backswing motion then onto the line at top / downswing.

Makes sense. I guess seeing that red line in V1 can be deceiving. Glad I asked! Thanks Todd.

I spent much wasted time trying to figure out why I could not get the clubunder plane on the backswing and then be always be slightly over plane on downswing. I found out that I was taking the clubhead to far up the line before lifting the club. When I started moving the clubhead directly toward my back from where the club was resting behind the ball, my club immediately was under plan on backswing and on plane during the down swing. I now have a very consistant shot, major change for me and took at least 8 strokes off my game. The only thing I have to watch now is will hook/pull sometimes. But I never slice or push now. My two cents.....

Hey Jack, I think I understand. Does it feel like your really bringng the club inside? I had taken some time off recenly(nagging injury) and it felt like I was taking the club inside on the takeaway. I haven't done the PVC drill in awhile either. I pulled up older video from the summer and my club was planing at the top....but my lower body movement was poor then. Now my lower body is moving but my backswng is wrong!

Yes, the club feels like it moves to the inside. It really doesn't that much if you keep your lead arm staight. Moving into backswing like that, for me, hands and club are under plane, automatically. Then on downswing, the hands are on plane and club gets on plane, automatically. Don't have to think about it. I do a normal hip turn, shoulder turn and take backswing up to intersect with trail humerus bone in the middle. I, too, have been ill most of summer, nothing serious, but handicap index went to 17.5. Last round before surgery, shot a 79. With idle time was finally figured it out with the plane problem. I had videoed myself upteen times but couldn't catch me moving club up the line. I just misunderstood that taking the club back was not up the line. Hard headed I am......
