There was good question about Moe's swing on another forum - thought I'd bring here for everyone's help:

I have a question for you if you don't mind. In the videos Moe has his driver many inches behind the ball at the start of his swing, do you have this in your swing as well? I believe I read that Moe had the ball several inches in front of his foot with the driver, do you use that method also? Is the forward ball position continued in the iron shots as well? I find the videos of Moe intriguing. Thanks for any info.

Answer -
Yes, the driver is set up a few inches behind the ball - as Moe set every club body center when he started his swing. He set up with the club against the ball - then just before he took the club back in his back swing he would set the club back to body center. But he originally addressed the ball with the club up against the ball then set the club back.
He had the ball very forward in his stance when he hit a 7* driver - it was way before the time of proper lofts for swing speeds. Moe should have been hitting a 9.5* to 10* driver (even Tiger hits a 9.5* driver today). To get the ball on the proper launch angle (proper flight) Moe had to put the ball that far forward in his stance. (Should have seen how far forward his ball was in his stance when he hit off a Coke bottle). But this is what fascinated golfers/people that watched him. No one else could do this as their swings would not allow it. By the time they had reached that position their shoulders were way too open to make contact with the ball. Moe could do that because of how long he stayed "square" through impact.... When Moe changed to a proper lofted driver (later in his life and when those drivers came out) - the ball position came way back - you can see pictures below....
Moe's ball position on the rest of his irons were not that different than conventional.... (if such thing). He did not have them forward as compared to his low lofted driver. 6 iron slightly forward of center, etc... A ball position where the club is suppose to be hit from.
To see details of Moe's ball position you can go to: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=273214342338794&pr=Online_Instruction&curPhoto=0&curAlbum=Ball%20Position or http://moenormangolf.com/contents.php?top_cms_id=52
Good Question,

I wish I'd have read this answer before I posted my answer on that other board. Maybe the master can check my work and give me a grade. :)

That's great. Tiger uses a 10.5 degree driver just like me! Wait. That means one of us is likely wrong... I've never been on the same range as him at the same time, but I'm guessing his swing speed is faster.
Russ.
P.S. I should use the same equipment as Tiger because other than swing speed Tiger and I are exactly alike. Swing speed, and he's taller. And younger. And more flexible. And stronger. And his wife is taller than my wife. Oh, and I have a beard. But mostly swing speed. And maybe some other stuff. |

You are right - but his shaft flex is considerably stronger than most. In fact I believe it is XXS. (Extra extra stiff).
Spent the day with Hank Haney in a teaching summit this past Monday here in OKC. He spoke for 5 hours about his time with Tiger... stories upon stories upon stories - they were GREAT!!
And Hank mentioned Moe many times. Extremely positive with great respect. I'm going to write about this in my next etip... was a lot of fun an great stuff - tons of inside information about Tiger (and Moe).
