"Little Moe" Signature School
August 2008 Instructional Newsletter UPDATE
Issue #80A

"Give yourself a chance at Success"

Hello Everyone,

We just finished our last Oklahoma school of 2008 at our Academy here in Oklahoma City. We had a lot of fun and it is always interesting to see the different students at our schools.

This past school we had students ranging from beginners to advanced, those playing golf only a few times in their lives to those who have played for 50 years +.

We had students from as far as South Africa to as close as living at Coffee Creek (our home course) and everywhere in between.. ie. Kansas, Iowa, Texas, California....

The interesting point is how everyone showed great improvement and more importantly EVERYONE has a very good idea and path to get their game to the next level.

We would like to thank everyone who attended, and look forward to seeing everyone in the near future!!

Spreading the word

Help us share the word about Moe Norman with the golf world!

If you find something in this Etip particularly helpful, share it with your friends. Just click button below.

Thank you for your help in spreading the word about Moe Norman's simple and effective swing!

The 4th Annual Moe Norman Memorial

For anyone interested - see what other's are saying about our annual Moe Norman Memorial:
http://fuzz2moe.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~8060.asp

FYI - Some of Moe's family will be at the event - as always, we are looking forward to sharing stories about Moe with everyone and his family.

When: September 27th & 28th, 2008
Where: Eagle Creek Golf Club - Orlando, FL - GGA's Orlando home
Who: YOU!!
Cost: $459

It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since we said goodbye to Moe. And we are proud and honored to host the Moe Norman Memorial Outing in his honor. Now only 6 weeks away, the 4th Annual Moe Norman Memorial will continue the tradition of gathering to honor the legend, and the man who has allowed us all to become better ball strikers.

Whether this is your first time, or if you've been every year, don't wait to reserve your space. This event has become a great reunion each year of Moe Norman fans. Many friendship's have been forged at the "Moe", and we expect this year's event will be no different.

Now to the golf itself. We get many people each year who say they don't want to play because they feel like they aren't "good enough". Friends, this simply isn't the case. This outing is PRIMARILY about meeting fellow Moe golfers, making lasting friendships, and experiencing Moe Norman's legacy. We (GGA) look at it the Moe Memorial is more of an outing/gathering rather than a competitive tournament. This event each year only expands Moe's legacy, and you should be part of it.

Both days are a scramble type format - one day a "scramble" and the other a "shamble". You play on a team with other Moe single axis golfers - format is set up to have a lot of fun and meet other Moe single axis golfers. We have putting, most accurate drive, closest to the pin, and many other contests during the events. Again, all are set up to enhance everyone's enjoyment, but more importantly, to honor Moe and his legacy.

Following/preceding play each day, we will have lunch and hold ball striking and short game clinics for all participants.

To register for the memorial, simply visit our Moe Memorial Page on our website. If you have further questions, please email Scott Renfrow at scottr@swinglikemoe.com.

We look forward to seeing you at the 'Moe'!

NEW GGA Grip - Testimonials...

Testimonials are starting to pour in about the new GGA Grip:

From: Omer D. <snak***@ntl.***.ca>

Date: Monday, August 25, 2008 8:03 AM

To: timkgraves@cox.net

Subject:

Hi Tim, I don't normally do this but I thought I would send some kudos to you folks regarding the grips. I put them on this Friday and was immediately impressed by their feel and the "idiot proof" markings. I went out to play Saturday and proceeded to shoot the best round of the year. I play to an 8 index and shot a 76. I followed this up on Sunday with a 75. I haven't been this low all year so I am giving credit to the grips....Great job.... Thanks, Omer D

Hal G:

These grips are awesome!!! I just spent a day at the driving range and worked through all my clubs. WOW is all I got to say. I never had to think or fidget about having the correct grip. Absolutely amazing. Hit all clubs really great. Got rid of most of the slice problem. I think I must have been open at address. I think that is what Brent was trying to show me at the school last April. With these grips no problem, correct club head alignment each time.

I can't wait to see how many at the Moe have the new grips.

New GGA Grip - First Batch is going FAST!!!

The Graves Golf Academy is proud to announce the release our new grip - a grip that is USGA conformed, can be used on all clubs and has markings so you will be able to put your hands on your clubs exactly like Moe gripped his own clubs.

You can see the grip, installation instructions, grip fitting chart and much more at: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?&pr=GGA_Grips

How did this grip come to fruition?

About 4 years ago, Todd (Graves) put a plan in motion;

First part of the plan: Develop a grip training club so everyone (whether they are with us in person or 1,000 miles away can put their hands on the club correctly and feel "Moe's Feeling of Greatness" everything he/she grips the club. He produced the grip, and it has been BY FAR our "best selling and most popular" training product of the GGA - if you don't have one yet - just ask the 1,000s that have it.... ask them what it has done for their game. Imagine - every time you go to the range, pulling out the grip training club, hitting shots with "perfect" hands on the club. You can see more on our Training Grip and Club of our website (short video about the grip/club).

Second part of the plan: Produce a video teaching everyone how to hold the grip training club and how to grip the club "just like Moe" so everyone can then work on other fundamentals (i.e. the stance, set up, take away, leverage positions, etc..) to swing like Moe rather then always "fighting" their grip. This was done and with every training grip club order - the training video/DVD is included.

Third part of the plan: Produce a grip that can be used on the students clubs, is USGA conformed and is a "good looking and good feeling" grip that has the same markings as the GGA grip training club (without the molding). So, now EVERY student can train with the GGA Training Grip Club and then match the same markings on their clubs (with the GGA grips) and grip their own clubs just like Moe - perfect EVERY time.

The third part of the plan was completed early this year, the grips have arrived - they are AWESOME. They are already on our clubs, many of our demo clubs, and hopefully all our students clubs soon.

Fourth part of plan: A video on our website (free) - how to install the grips and tips to using the grips. (Will be out VERY soon..).

To see more about the GGA Transitional Grip, click HERE or on the image below to visit the web page dedicated to the grips. By the way, in ONE grip, both right AND left handed golfers (yes lefty friends, you read that correctly) can now feel Moe Norman's grip.

As you see in the picture, the markings are similar to those on the GGA Training Grip Club - shows where the lead hand "pad" should be, where the thumb of the lead hand should sit, where the trail hand pinching should occur, the positioning of the trail hand, etc.. This grip works for overlapping, 10 finger and interlocking grips as our training grip club was set up to accommodate.

Finally - hopefully by now, everyone reading our etips knows the importance of a good hold/grip on the club. Without a good hold/grip on the club, you will be building continual compensations to make up for your grip - and I guarantee this will create poor/inconsistent golf.

We are hoping by creating these new grip "tools" they will aid everyone and help short cut the process of developing their swing to Swing Like Moe!!!!

COST OF THE GRIPS:

$8.95 per grip

$99 for 14 grips (grip your entire set (except putter). Also gives you 1 extra grip to experiment with grip sizing for your personalized grip size.

SPECIAL (Ends Aug. 31st):

If you have ordered a club(s) (any club through the GGA from Adams, Titleist, Callaway, Cobra or any other major manufacturer) in 2008, you can receive a grip for that club at cost of shipping & handling only.

In other words, if you ordered for example an Adams driver last month through the GGA, you can receive a GGA grip for cost of shipping.

AND / OR - if you would like an entire set (14), you can receive for 1/2 price - $44.95

So. here's the deal - if you have supported us with purchasing clubs through the GGA in 2008 - we thought we'd return the favor.

How to order

NOW - IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE 1 or 100 of the first batch of our new grips - YOU NEED TO GET YOUR ORDER IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

If you have NOT purchased clubs through GGA in 2008 and are ready to purchase grips - CLICK HERE to place your order.

If you HAVE purchased clubs through GGA and want to take advantage of the special offer available to you, please email Tim Graves or Scott Renfrow.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions, please feel free to email anytime

Give yourself a chance at Success
-GGA Upcoming Webinar #3

by Todd Graves

Recently, one of our alumni asked a few questions. I thought the dialogue was useful.

Question: How do you set higher goals and what is the process of getting to those goals. And what should be reasonable expectations of your-self in the game?

You truly must be completely accepting of exactly how things are at this moment. If you want to improve your golf game then do it because you enjoy the process.

Enjoying the process is the most important part because it allows you to enjoy each moment that you have, no matter what happens. You must stop judging yourself and the moments.

This does not mean to not set goals and try to be better. What it means is that it is the path and all of the things that occur along that path that allow our moments to be full.

Let me give you an example.

When you began to play golf, like most people, I am sure you were dreadful. You most likely decided to get better. You might also have even thought about being a single-digit handicapper and maybe even scoring and even par round or breaking par.

You most likely have improved and maybe even achieved some of these goals. Now think about the path you took. Would you do it again?

The answer is most likely yes.

The reason is that it was the process and the incremental improvements that got you to this point. Hard work and personal achievement can't be taken away from you because you now "Own" it. You can't own it without hard work and that goes with everything in life.

This is the problem I see with youth, and maybe all older generations have complained about this phenomenon that many people want things before they work for them. We see successful people when they are successful but we don't see all of the hard work behind the scenes. Unwilling to do what is behind the scenes, this culture has the "Give it to me now" attitude.

The problem is that when they get things without working for them, they lack the most important thing; the personal ownership of it. Therefore they don't appreciate it and take it for granted. Nothing at this level has value. Everything is empty and these types of people continually search for more meaning in things going from one thing to the next.

Working hard is important. Standing at the range and developing yourself and learning is critical to the process. As a matter of fact, I have never seen anyone really develop without it.

Question: How do you give yourself the proper time to train and apply your the skills attained to succeed, and balance expectations with the very hard reality that golf is not easy?

How much time would you give your child when he is learning to walk? The answer is that this question is a question of life. Nothing worth achieving is easy. Therefore, accepting every challenge, working through problems and adversity must be welcomed. Children welcome it without resistance as does nature you watch a seed push its flower from the soil.

We are human and most of us have expectations where we judge ourselves. You must first realize that expectations come from you and are controlled by you.

To personally handle this in my life I stopped judging outcomes. Doing my best became my only requirement. This meant that I had a way to prepare myself for tournaments and then when I played the tournament, I made sure I did my best. No matter what results I produced, I always walked away knowing that I did my best.

On one occasion, while going through some personal issues, I couldn't get my mind focused. I did not want to be playing so I walked off of the golf course. If I can't do my best then there is no reason to do it.

If you control expectations then the only thing you have to do is to do your best. There is nothing else to do except decide what doing your best means.

This is the answer to improvement. It is about processes and working on fundamentals. This is how you do your best.

Remember, improving is easy if it is about progress not perfection.

A Visualization Process

Here is a visualization process I use when I set my mind on achieving something. If you haven't ever visualized or used your imagination, give this process a try.

Create a picture in your mind of how you want yourself to be. (I suggest that you focus on yourself and not an object). For example if you want to master Moe Norman's golf swing then visualize yourself swinging exactly like Moe. Maybe even visualize yourself standing in Moe's body, holding the golf club and looking down at the golf ball. By doing this, you are seeing a different you in a different situation which allows you to create the feeling of you like Moe. This is what I call a "higher picture".

This "higher" picture of your-self is the ideal, perfect picture. When you look at this picture, let me ask you a question. What would life be like if you achieved this picture?" How would you feel?

Having asked these questions, you notice that this picture is the reason that we continue to want more, strive for better continue to see a better picture of ourselves and future.

If we accept our situation and keep our ideal picture in our minds, we can move forward, deal with the obstacles and reach our goals. The key to all of this process is a willingness to do the work and put the effort, which is a topic for another conversation.

Good Luck,

Remember - Always Practice with a Purpose

"I Play into my legs".

I have heard this a million times, but finally this week I am getting the true feeling of what this means. I have been really struggling with my swing the last few weeks. I was getting "better" at the start of the season, but "suddenly" I lost it a few weeks ago. We had our CT outing last week (NEOSAMS)and I did not play well. I had a couple of "good" holes (birdies) but then I would follow it with a triple. I did not know where the ball was going to go.

I reviewed several of the video clips on the Knowmoe sight, along with the 1.5 drill. I noticed Todd flexing that front leg and talking about how it takes pressure off the back. I tried to incorporate the move into my PVC drill all week. Yesterday was my first attempt at hitting balls after working on the move in the living room and back yard all week.

The focus of the practice was to be sure I had a good set up with each shot. I built a hitting station to check alignment and worked on the "check points" that Tim had showed us in CT this past May. I really got my legs set and spent the first 20 min hitting "1/2" shots feeling the front "flexed" knee and hitting into that feeling.

After working that, I went to hitting "full" wedge shots at targets. I really felt like I was making good contact - steady base and I was able to release my hands at the target and maintain good balance. I worked my way through the bag.

When I got to my longer clubs, hybrid and fairway woods, I worked on the same principle, trying to maintain a good rythum. Results - some of the best shots I have hit in a long time.

The trasition to the driver was the same. As I felt more "confident" with the set up and how it felt to really hit into my legs, I "increased" my swing speed. After a while I felt like I was swinging as "hard" as I would want to, yet my balance was good and the ball flight was great, straight - to slight draw with good launch angle and at my target.

Bottom line - the swing really starts from the ground up - get a good foundation and the rest will follow. There have been some questions about increasing club speed and gaining distance, I say start with your "legs" and see how that helps.
