I've tried to apply Tim's instructions from the 7 principles DVD, but I have either hit fat, sculled or picked the ball too cleanly. Once this sort of pattern sets in, I find it mentally nearly impossible to make a relaxed, free swing.

Today I went to our club's practice green and told myself I wouldn't leave the bunker until the root cause had been identified and hopefully fixed. Eventually I realized that my hands were over active. When I started swinging with an arm swing and what feeled like "dead hands" I solved my problem. Now my key thought is to swing the arms and let the upper torso turn in response to the arm swing. I concentrate on turning through to a full finish with my chest facing the target line, keeping an even tempo. Results are fantastic. I even tried it with everything from a 60 degree wedge to a 6 iron. It works on all clubs. I now feel confident on bunker shots up to 80 to 100 yards, as well as greenside bunkers.

This technique has also improved my pitching, including soft lobs from just off the green. I am really stoked and can't wait to play tomorrow.

Perhaps this was obvious to others, but today was an aha moment for me.

lol...Jim

Hogan A.H.S.
