Posted - 06/26/2008 : 00:56:56 I have heard that Moe used hockey tape? Does anyone know if this is true? Is it legal to do so? Any recommendations/ suggestions will be much appreciated. |

Posted - 06/26/2008 : 08:10:42 The picture is actually hockey tape - one of his older clubs -
FYI - we have some of Moe's clubs in our academy/schools - our students love hitting them and feeling exactly what the club/grip, etc.. felt like when Moe hit it....
Was funny - a couple of schools ago, put Moe's clubs in the hand of one of our students - said "try this club" - he hit it, looked at the club and said "what is this". Told him was one of Moe's clubs he had played with in competition - Student turned toward me and said "that was sacreligious" to hit Moe's club with his swing..... funny....

Posted - 06/26/2008 : 07:56:12 Moe used to us hockey tape for the grip of his clubs (quite a few years ago). Later in his life, he used standard grips with a small amount of tape wrapped under the grip (same as anyone would built up a grip). Moe's grip size was equivalent to a standard grip with 2 extra wraps under the grip.
You can see the grip size / his grip at: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=61800441897534&pr=Online_Instruction&curPhoto=0&curAlbum=Grip%20Comparison

Posted - 06/26/2008 : 06:39:11 The rules don't prohibit adding tape as far as I can see, I believe this is in Appendix C of the rule book. It does say they have to be circular in shape, with no buldge or "waist". I added tape to the outside of my grips when experimenting to find the size that worked best for me, but I used the stretchy gauze-like tape designed for tennis grips. It's easy to apply and has a nice tacky feel. I think most then install their grips using a specific number of layers of masking or grip tape underneath the grip. For me that works out to 4 wraps of tape under the trail hand and one under the lead hand (including the final layer of grip tape). |
