I just found out David Lake is now selling the heads for his
1 Iron clubs as components on his web site.
That kind of blows all that has been said about shaft optimization
and same length right out the window. How can any of what has been told to everyone about same length clubs and shaft optimization be true if you sell the heads separately, which allows anyone to put any length shaft of any kind in the heads. That makes it no different then any other company that makes and sells golf equipment.
I have been such a fool to have bought into all this hype.
I am now getting rid of the clubs and going to what Todd reccommended
to me last year.
Thanks for letting me vent.

I am a good example of why David Lake started selling components.
I wanted a set of single length, single weight, single lie clubs ... but could not understand how a WTF measurement could give me a fitting set of clubs.
I ended up building my set to 37 inches (my 8-iron) with DG S300 shafts and Feel Golf Release Grips and after playing with them for a month, have decided that the 3 - PW are fantastic but the GW - SW - LW must be shorter. I am taking an inch off the clubs tomorrow and adding the necessary weight to the heads and correcting the head lie.
These are very nice heads with minimal offset and bounce.
Everyone cries that the lofts need to be stronger in the 3-4-5 irons to make up for the loss in club head speed ... but my 3 iron head has much more weight than yours, and I will hit the centre of my 3-iron more often than I would hit the centre of yours. Those are the two things people forget.
For a full swing - my 1-irons are great.
For pitching / chipping / bunker play ... its a different ball game. Having a 37 inch long LW does not help in anyway at all. (Hence my changes) The reason all single length players claim that their 3-iron is easy to hit is because it is shorter than traditional 3-irons. But they dont use the same logic when it comes to the shorter irons. Apparently the single setup gives you other advantages with them (I disagree)
David (and some of his followers) have a very strict ideas on static fitting and maintaining the single length throughout the entire sset which is fine for them ... but if I dont dynamic fit the club based on the shaft I use and my swing then history tells me its a waste of time ... and I like my short game clubs to be shorter.
After 10 years of dynamic fitting, I know that a DG S300 iron shaft of 37 inches in a club head that weighs 275 grams requires a lie angle of 63.5 degrees. And that is what my 1-Irons are.
David originally recommended 37.5 inch shafts to me based on using his shafts and my WTF ... seems like nothing but a good guess to me. David didnt know my swing speed or angle of attack on the ball etc etc ...
If you compare David Lake's 1-Iron heads to the other single weight / single lie heads around they are first class. Very clean, very simple.
Don't be so worried about what people tell you you need, work it out for yourself. Moe did - and look where it got him. |

left handed 1 iron irons for sale. I love these clubs but back problems have forced me to sell. Clubs were new last spring. Includes 3 through PW plus SW and LW. New price is $769. I will sell for $200 plus shipping. They are in great shape. |

They say that even a broken watch is right twice a day, and it looks like this cheap Timex hit the mark (once, at least) with my guess about David Lake's reasons for deciding to sell components to clubmakers:
Our clubheads are designed to be shafted at the same length and with the same shaft flex throughout a set regardless of the type or brand of shaft used. It is true that our Optimized Shafts were designed specifically for these clubheads and will produce the highest level of performance. However, we have received hundreds of requests from professional and hobbiest clubmakers who wish to try the single-length concept but would like to be able to experiment with various type shafting configurations.

I've been playing a complete set of 1 Irons for quite some time now and I'd never go back to conventional style clubs again. I've dropped 10 strokes from my game and still getting better.
I don't agree with many of the posts to this thread that say that selling the clubheads in anyway lessens the 1 Iron Golf system. There's a lot of hobbiest clubmakers out there that would like to experiment with the single-length idea and, besides, who cares what shaft they use or what length they build their clubs.
The 1 Iron system and the way they shaft their clubs works. I know this from personal experience and every claim made on their website has been proven 100% true to me. |

As a satisfied (make that delighted) 1-Iron customer and devoted Moeniac, your post caught my eye. Like you, I find it interesting that, given his staunch advocacy of the single-length concept, David Lake has chosen to unbundle his system, and offer components (heads) to club-making enthusiasts.
My initial reaction was the same as yours: this seems to contradict virtually everything Mr. Lake claims to be 'about.'
A closer reading of his product catalog, however, suggests - to me, anyway - that there are a couple possible explanations we might be overlooking:
1. That the heads, by themselves, might be of sufficient quality to interest other clubmakers (I am not knowledgeable on the subject, so I have no observations to share).
2. Mr. Lake is responding to demand from clubfitters who like his uniform components (e.g. uniform loft progressions, lie angles, and clubhead weights) but want to otherwise vary from his specifications (e.g. graphite shafts, different club lengths, etc.).
I cannot read minds, so I will only pose the question: Is it possible for David Lake to sell components, without Selling Out?

Right. I'm not disparaging the concept at all, I think it's actually a great idea. I choked a bit on some of the marketing speak, but I understand that selling means differentiating yourself in some way. I'd probably still be playing them, but I found I didn't actually like everything the same length after all. I built my wife a set though, and she loves them. |

David Lake would be the first to tell you that simply building a club with his heads will not make them 1Irons. I have used these clubs for about a year and my scores have decreased by a good 10 points. With that said, I realize they are not for everybody but maybe worth a try.

I have a set of the 1 iron clubs, except I bought the Purefit components from MyOstrichGolf and assembled them myself. I liked them for maybe two weeks, but now they're in the corner with the rest. I agree that most of the marketing hype on his site is ridiculous. His heads will be different though, because building a same-length set requires heads that all weigh the same, and a different (stronger) loft in the long irons to make up for lost length. There's only so much you can do with a shaft, and nobody has any magic that I know of. His claims that the same clubs, same flex, etc., work for everyone is what set off my BS detector. |
