Folks, I already know that not having a firm lead wrist when chipping will cause a fat or thin shot, but yesterday I discovered something else while practicing my short game at the range. If you have too much wrist cock on your back swing (for chips) it can also cause fat shots. I've had some difficulty as of late with hitting fat chip shots and also have difficulty chipping from tight lies eventhough I was making sure my wrist was flat. Yesterday on the swing, but yesterday I was trying some different things and lessening the wrist cock on the back swing worked wonders. Actually, what I do now is to just let my arms take the club back (very little wrist cock) and then accelerate on the way down and I was making very crisp contact. I even selected the places with the tightest lies on the range and I did not have any problems. At any rate, I think that it's possible that an exaggerated wrist cock for chips can cause problems so if you are having this problem and have tried everything else to fix it, try this and maybe it will help you to.

Papadave - YIp, the 2 critical things I think about are flat lead wrist and pop the ball. If you don't pop the ball you can also hit it fat or worse....the dreaded double-hit. Yikes!

I agree totally but have also observed that what Tim describes as a "Pop" stroke prevents fat chips. I really did not understand what he meant by "Pop" but learned the hard way that a long smooth chip attempt will frequently result in a decelerated stroke and fat hits. A much shorter stroke, with the firm wrist Mojo23 talks about, results in a crisp "Pop" at impact and the ball dances off the club on its way to a good chip.

By no means have I mastered this technique but have made tremendous progress using more lofted clubs so that I can get used to the feeling. Right now, my favorite is a 56* sand wedge. Also, in my thinking, if there is significant wrist cock necessary in the attempt, I regard the shot as a pitch and move the ball forward and use my 64* wedge and Tim's pitching techniques.
