I pulled up to the practice range a couple of days ago. I seem to be doing that a lot more often since attending the BYGC....and enjoying it. Anyway, I parked in front of the putting green because that is where I start my practice session. I watched a guy casually walk onto the green with his putter in hand. He dropped two balls about 15 feet from the nearest hole and began his "practice" session. He attempted his two putts, missed them badly and then shook his head in disgust while muttering something I probably didn't want to hear. He then attempted to 2-putt each ball. He missed them, shook his head, muttered something and then tapped them in. He then took the balls out and attempted two more very lengthy shots, missed, shook his head, muttered something and so it went. He only stayed at it for a few minutes and quit. I'm pretty sure that he didn't learn anything during that practice session.

I didn't tell this story to make fun of the guy. I've done exactly the same thing in the past. What watching this guy did for me was reinforce the truth and effectiveness in what Tim teaches about practicing the short game-with a purpose. And I have been following Tim's advice. My short game is improving. My confidence on and around the green is growing.

The guy was gone by the time I pulled my bag of putting aides out of the car. I set up the string drill on one hole and started practicing. I have actually had guys make fun of me when I'm using the training aides. I just use it as an opportunity to tell them about Moe, Todd, and Tim.

Enjoy the Journey...

Funny you should mention this story. Last evening was the first real good weather we have had here in MA for a while. Of course, the practice center was packed. I started with some warm up half swings then worked my way to my driver. I then went to the chipping green where I spent most of my time. There were about 6 or 7 guys "practicing" around the green. They each had a pile of range balls and were "chipping" to the same hole again and again. Actually, they were blading, thinning, skulling etc back and forth.

I took out a couple my regular balls and started to chip at different holes with different clubs. One time my balls went to a hole that another guy was chipping to. He raked my 2 balls into his pile. I kindly told him that they were mine. He responded "what difference does it make?" I told him that I was actually using Callaway balls to chip. He laughed and said, "why would you do that?" I just asked him if he played on the course with range balls? He said "no, I guess not". He looked at me for a few minutes and then left. Truth is, the way he was chipping and "practicing" I guess it didn't matter what he was using.

I guess we have it pretty good with Todd and Tim. We not only are taught the proper mechanics, but the proper way to practice. All the little things that make it possible to actually get better.

I've gotten lots of looks from guys when I set up the string on the practice green too. I'll see them smirking at me and want to ask them how their putting is, but I just keep my mouth shut. I don't stop the string drill until I make 8 or 9 in a row, so that the cup won't hold any more. I want to ask them, "Let me see you do that without the string". And...if it's good enough for Tiger, well enough said.

Let them make fun, then challenge them to a game of 21 and show them the "business".
