I am shipping the Moe DVD today. The video shows Moe in a clinic. He is about 30 pounds lighter than the Golf Digest photos and his swing is classic young Moe Norman. More range of motion and he is swinging very fast. When you receive the video, I would like to start a discussion.
Thanks.

Todd, please send me a copy as well. You should have all my info on file.
I found that straightening my legs (with knees slightly flexed) in a more Moe-like stance has increased my consistency. I guess I was bending my knees too much. |

Todd,
Got the video today, and I thank you.You were not kidding when you said Moe was a lot faster-WOW!However,I was also struck by how little his swing differed from his earlier years to his later years.Moe was truly a model of consistency.
You suggested that you wanted to start a discussion on the video so here goes my input.I have just about every publiclly offered video of Moe ,that I am aware of, being available for sale. While watching this one, my fancy was caught by Moe answering the question about why he grounded the club so far behind the ball.Of course,it was because you can't get any lower or slower with the takeaway than the ground.
However, what intrigued me, and therefor, what would be interesting to hear you comment on is his waggle. It is virtually and exactly the same on every swing and, apparantly ,was the same his whole life.A quirk that I noticed is how Moe set the club at address, waggled once then just before he swings slides the club foreward away from his body-each and every time.Visually,it appears that the heel of the clubhead is aligned with the ball then he swings.
Don't know if this is what you had in mind by starting a discussion but found it facinating to observe.Of course, I immediately proceeded to try it out for myself and guess what, yep hit some of the best 6 irons I ever hit.I couldn't replicate the exact tempo of his waggle but did slide the club away from my body after my own version of a waggle. This seems to promote a more sweeping swing motion which Moe also talks about on the video.Am I goofy or what??
Again thanks, Chuck |

Chuck,
I haven't received the dvd yet but noticed the same things on the Journeyman vhs. The waggle and pushing the club out.

Yes. I think it is important to observe everything that Moe did. I think there was a reason for it. I think there is a nubmber of was to look at Moe's golf swing. YOu can look at it as unique and idiosyncratic however the other side is that there are obvious mechanical reasons for it. I think we should observe both. I think we can learn from both.
One of the reasons for that is that Moe, being of a intuitive nature did things that suited him...because they felt right. While we (those who strive to improve) read magazines and watch the tour, are doing it because it works for others. I personally have learned much more from Moe because his intuition of placing the club behind the ball etc. had biomechanical reasons for it. In other words, he made it easier to hit a ball correctly by doing these things and it was his INTENT which makes these things important.

By the way, If any of you are left handed, I have converted this clinic to a Left Handed Version. Edmp (Chuck) has a left handed version. If you want a copy, I will send it to you. IF you purchased a Right Handed Copy, and you are left handed, It will be of no charge. Please E-mail me at toddg@swinglikemoe.com if you received a right handed copy and you are left handed. Just think, I am doing Video Production fittings now.
Thanks.

One thing I enjoy about this particular video of Moe is that it is Pre-Natural Golf. SO there is obviously no influence by scientific ideas. It is pure Moe Norman performing a clinic and talking about his swing. Great stuff.

Todd:
I have not yet received the DVD yet because the shipping takes a bit longer to NY, but what, in your opinion, are the characteristics in Moe's younger swing that are most noteworthy? Say, the top 3 or 5 things and why do you think those characteristics are relevant, either biomechanically or intuitively?
Thanks, Steve |
