My Experience at Graves Golf Academy June 2007 By Jim S. (Atlanta, GA) Alumni - GGA OKC School - June 2007
If you’re serious about improving your golf performance there is no better instructional program than what is offered at Graves Golf Academy. I had the recent opportunity to attend the Graves brothers’ 3-day school out in Oklahoma. What a treat for 60-year old guy from Atlanta. Todd and Tim Graves have the unique ability to take rather complex golf material and motion and reduced it down to four key components thanks to the genius of Moe Norman and his years of dedication to the game.
I started playing golf late in life (52 years of age). I never really tasted success in the game, but nonetheless enjoy it immensely. Over the past few years, I desired to improve my skill level so I attended a couple conventional golf instruction programs here and there, but with little success. After two back surgeries, I simply could not physically handle all the twisting gyrations you had to go through to hit the ball. I searched around for a simpler method and was attracted to Natural Golf (NG) because of the simplicity of motion. I attended three NG schools, but became disillusioned because every instructor had a different twist on the same material. At the end of the day I didn’t know who or what was right. Plus, NG’s constant push to buy their clubs became very annoying.
As a result, I fiddled with everything until my golf game went to mush. My playing partners loved me because I usually ended up providing all with lunch money. I never could predict with any kind of certainty how I was going to play. Despite some high scoring days (over 100), I’ve had several rounds in the mid to high 80’s which gave me hope that I could improve; hence, the trip to Oklahoma.
So why did I turn to the Graves Golf Academy?
I started searching for an alternative to NG and came across the Graves Academy. I did not realize Todd and Tim had started their own school unaffiliated with NG. After reviewing the Graves’ website and their “Total Game Overview DVD”, I was hooked. First, I was most impressed by several things: their loyalty to Moe and his single plane swing; their honesty and frankness about past relationships with Natural Golf; their instructional simplicity and purity (best videos and written materials on the market), their passion to teach Moe’s swing and desire for students of all ages to learn and excel at golf, and finally their unwavering love for the game of golf. The second reason I turned to the Graves school, was my desire—to learn for once and for all what golf mechanics are essential to hit a golf ball correctly? I wanted to have a clear picture what the proper grip, set-up, approach, and swing was all about and how to do it consistently over time regardless of club. After reviewing their materials, I was convinced that Todd and Tim could do all of that and more for me because of their mastery of Moe’s swing mechanics.
Well, did I get what I expected out of the 3-day school?
I was extremely satisfied. Although, I may still have to buy a few more lunches, it won’t be long before I will be playing much better golf, especially with the PVC drill. I now have the knowledge and confidence to advance quickly. Just the improvements I can make in putting and chipping (thanks to Tim) will cause my scores to drop 5 to 7 points.
As good as their DVDs and other instructional materials are, the individual time (one-on-one) spent with Todd, Tim, Scott, and Brent was over-the-top for me. Further, the video tape of my swing before and after instruction told the whole story. It proved to me that I can swing on plane using the proper grip, set-up and approach. In short, if you believe in the merits of a single plane golf swing mastered by Moe Norman and modernized by Todd Graves, then there is no other better investment of time and money than Graves Golf Academy in my judgment.
In conclusion, everything about the Graves Academy is enjoyable. Most importantly, after talking with Todd, I can readily see that he is on his way to making a significant impact in the world of golf, which includes writing a book. With Tim’s gusto, skill, and personality, the two of them make a powerful business combination. With a little luck and proper strategic positioning, we will all witness many more great things coming from Graves Golf Academy.
If you love golf and desire to improve, go experience this excellent school for yourself—you won’t be disappointed.
